Thank you so much. I have emailed pretty much every clinic in Maine. I filled out that application for the vet billing solution. At your clinic is there a payment plan available? I have also read that at some places if you receive food stamps they will also help you. But Smoky hasn’t been neutered and they all require she be neutered. I absolutely hate when animals are in pain and I’m trying to find something to do for her but I am financially unable to pay for a $200 vet bill.

Tx! Of the litters that turned out to be -, did you mean after being retested at 6 mths? I’m aware of causes of false+, but was wondering what the stats are on kittens who initially test -, then turn out to be + when retested at 6 mths.

Because of the stigmas and misunderstanding related to FIV, even if the litter is negative initially, we always test again at 6 months just to be sure although it’s most likely not necessary.

I’ve personally never heard from anyone in rescue about a litter initially testing negative and then testing positive later and I’ve never read any literature describing that scenario either.

I think that false positives are the overwhelming issue.

I’d be 100% comfortable adopting a kitten that tested negative from a FIV
positive mom … but for what it’s worth, I’d also be comfortable
adopting an FIV positive kitten or adult as well. 🙂

Thanks for your helpful reply….and for whatever it’s worth, we adopted a kitten last year with FeLV ,which I know is quicker to kill) who died 10mths later-it was my 9 and 6 yr old’s first pet, and while we’re glad to have given her a happy, albeit short life, it ripped our hearts out to have to put her down 2 days before her first birthday and that’s just not a scenario I am willing to replicate for my family. Thanks so much for your help-this is a great service!

How Likely Is FIV To Be Transmitted From Mother’s Milk To Kittens? If A…

How likely is FIV to be transmitted from mother’s milk to kittens? If a mother cat is pos for FIV and all 4 of her 8wk old kittens tested neg for FIV, what is the likelihood of the results actually being a false neg?

Tx!

    Hi Carolyn,

I don’t know if it’s technically impossible, but certainly not a common scenario in my personal experience. Over the last 4 years my rescue has taken in 3 cats (with litters) that have tested positive for FIV. All of the litters of kittens turned out to be negative. Our policy with FIV+ mom’s is to test the kittens on intake and then again in 6 months to verify results.

We did have one litter that tested positive initially and then tested negative 6 months later (a second test was given at 6 months just to double check).

Here’s some additional information from Best Friends Animal Society http://bestfriends.org/Resources/Pet-Care/Cats/Health-And-Care/FAQs-About-FIV/Hope

    Hope this helps,
    Adam

Hello. I Recently Got A Dog By A Woman Who Said She Could No Longer…

Hello. I recently got a dog by a woman who said she could no longer take care of her. The lady said that she also thinks the dog is pregnant. About 3 weeks later her abdomen had grown and her nipplez were easily seen under her fur. I really thought she was pregnant but yesterday I noticed she was licking herself and she was bleeding. Later a male dog came to her. Nothing happened though. Was this her gaining weight because of regular meals and she’s in heat or is there some pregnancy complications

please have her seen by a vet, and keep her away from dogs until she is spayed.

For How Long Shall I Isolate My Parvo Puppy From Her Younger Mate? She Has…

For how long shall I isolate my parvo puppy from her younger mate? She has her own room with a balcony upstairs, while the other pup lives downstairs. She’s sick from last Monday and I’m planning to isolate them for at least 1,5 week more.

So 2 more weeks. I don’t know if I’m doing things right, but always after leaving my isolated pup I change clothes and take shower (and force others to do so) so as to keep the little one safe. Is there something I can do more? I’m planning to bleach the upstairs tomorrow (last time I bleached the floors in the entire house was Friday).

Unfortunately not yet! Our Golden began 7th week yesterday and lab 9th (they were rescued), but vet told me last week that for vaccination both of them should be healthy. Therefore, I’m going to contact the clinic about this matter in the morning. What bugs me is Golden’s negative test result, which I hope was false negative as he developed all of the symptoms (yellow diharrea -> green -> Yellow + fresh blood and mucus -> dark brown. Now the stool is brown, some parts are darker, but the consistency is more solid / vomitting at the beginning, lethargy, refusing to eat and drink – he began to eat by himself on 4th or 5th day). Still I believe that physically our Golden was in a much better condition because I fed him with a syringe every 1 – 2 hours (even at night), while our lab didn’t eat at all while in hospital. And wasn’t force-fed either.
Still, I will wait next 2 weeks to be absolutely sure.

sounds like typical young cat behavior.  i’d get him in for a general checkup to be sure, though.

  2. Beth James

Of course, the vet says he is healthy. It is a psychological or behavioral issue. Wish I knew what happened to him as a baby. Just would like to stop the biting. We had our last cat for 17 years so cat care isn’t new to us… How can we stop the biting?

  3. Beth James

He has all his shots and we had him micro chipped in case he ever gets out.
These attacks come out of nowhere! I hate to admit it but he can be scary. He attacks our legs and arms. We haven’t had him very long, but we love him and are keeping him (so cute). He can be very loving, lying down for hours, purring and we pet him. And he has a favorite toy, a cat that plays fetch!
His demeanor changes in a split second, out of nowhere….is he just too happy??

  4. Beth James

Thank you Dr. Magnifico, but that video isn’t 100% our Shady. Sometimes, he will just attack from another room for no reason.,… Not just when we pet him. It is very strange and I try not to compare him to our previous pet, I know they all have different personalities…..but the biting!!!! I wonder if it was from a prior trauma, he was homeless and underweight when he chose us at the adoption center??

  5. Beth James

He was given a certified clean bill of health from the adoption center and again in April for his wellness visit from my vet. The biting has been since day 1. I think it has been decreasing in frequency. At first he was very skittish and afraid of noises, like thunder, but has calmed down tremendously, truthfully over the past few months. I will check out J Galaxy….thank you very much. Thank you too for having this site.
