Lucy and Lacee were boarded over last weekend, Friday nite through Sunday. We picked them up Sunday afternoon. Both have had their bordatella vaccinations. Thursday and Friday they both coughed a couple times. Today, Lucy is coughing a lot, not eating very much, and she seems a little lethargic. Lacee hasn’t gotten any worse and she is playing and eating. What do you suggest we do?

I have a American Staffordshire Terrier. She has had anxiety since we got her at a very young age of 6 weeks from a kill shelter in WV. She is now 7. I think all the vets at Jarrettsville Vet have seen Lucy at one time or another. We just moved 2 weeks ago. From the beginning of May when we started packing up the old house and continuing after we moved, she is having anxiety about going outside to use the potty. She has a covered crate, which she loves, that she stays in while I’m at work. But she has terrible anxiety about going outside, even if Lilly comes with us. I might get her to pee then she runs back into the house and poops. I don’t get it. I’ve never had an issue with her messing in the house before this. Does a calming medication help in this type of situation? I don’t want to drug her but we somehow have to work thru this so she feels comfortable about going outside and doing her business. She is on a leash so i’m always with her. I just don’t know what else to do. Any suggestions? Thank you for any help you can provide!

I have a 10-1/2 black lab that you (Dr. Morgan) has seen over the years. Lilly started sneezing yesterday and last nite and today she has had a nose bleed. What could be causing this? Thank you!

How do you feel about Capstar as a partial remedy for fleas?
Oh, Frontline Plus – I think the fleas eat that for breakfast!

Lauren Candlish I’m not to sure on how you can stop/treat this but I hope your dogs are ok. The only thing I can suggest after everything you have already tried is, after a big soapy bath, use a flea comb and then put on a spray. I think that combination could definitely make the situation better. I’m assuming you have more than one dog because you said dogs? If that’s the case I think you should have a separate comb for each one so as not to spread fleas and also bath separately if not already. (Also clean the bath after bathing one and then bath the other) if you are still dealing with the fleas perhaps take them to the vet and make sure it is fleas your dealing with. If you manage to rid one of fleas make sure to keep it away from the other dog/s that have fleas so it doesn’t pick them up again. You may already do this stuff and so sorry because then this advice is useless. I hope you manage to get rid of them safely and that your dogs are ok.
Hope this helps 🙂 sorry if it doesn’t 🙁 -
Jamie Mayhew A situation of severe fleas can be tough to completely eliminate. If you have already tried treating your dogs and house but are still suffering you may need to go to the extreme- my suggestion is time consuming, but has worked for me in the past:
Fleas have a cycle and without destroying every stage of the cycle they will just continue to breed and jump straight back on your dogs.
1. Fleas travel so I would treat your whole house (use a good house flea treatment as some can just slow down the process instead of actually killing the fleas- Johnson’s has always worked really well for me). Leave the spray to work for 12 hours without your dogs in the house, otherwise like i said the cycle will carry on.
2. While your house is being treated bathe your dogs- use flea shampoo, but most importantly do not just shower your dogs, after you have shampooed and washed them, fill the bath/ container up to their neck and let them soak for half an hour to an hour ( fleas are difficult to kill but they will drown after this amount of time). Your dogs may not like a long, soaking bath but if it relieves them of the fleas they will feel much mire comfortable.
3. Once your dogs are out of the bath, fully dried and brushed thoroughly, treat them with flea treatment (again some brands do not work as well as others- frontline is vet recommended, and works very well).
4. Let your dog back into the house after 12 hours.
Good luck
Is peroxide safe to use to clean an area on my black labs tail? We were at your office last nite to have Lilly’s anal glands released and a pedicure. i would have asked last nite but it just started today.
My dog has an issue with her front left pastern. There is a raw spot above the declaw. She is licking it and she won’t let me touch it. It is painful for her. Can I put medicine and a bandage over it to try and give it time to heal? Thanks!

Hi Dr. Magnifico, For the past couple weeks, I’ve caught my black lab "scooting." What causes her to do this?
Hello,
Dr Morgan works tomorrow from 1-3. If you are concerned she can see them. If they are acting normally and the cough isn’t worsening we usually say to just keep them quarantined and calm. But if the cough is worsening or they are lethargic or not eating then they should be seen.
Please remember to keep the dogs in the car until we are ready to see them just in case it is kennel cough which is contagious so we don’t spread it to any other dogs at the clinic.
