My daughter’s 13 yr old male cat started urinating all over the house, occasionally crying out. Is this a UTI? I read something about crystals??

How long does my dog have to fast before having an abdominal ultrasound?
My Golden Retriever was running in the yard playing and let out a yelp. She is now limping and won’t put weight on her back leg. Could it be a pulled muscle? I will take her to the vet in the AM if not better. Can I give her anything for pain?

Laura Hi there! I’m sorry this wasn’t seen until now – I check the site every day, but sometimes days-old posts just don’t show up right away!
In the future, I would NOT administer anything without your vet’s input. Some human medications might be okay but it’s safer to involve your vet in that question, as they know your dog and her medication tolerance. A better option would be crate rest until the vet appointment (with potty breaks on leash to ensure she doesn’t go running off like a goofball, further exacerbating the injury).
How is she doing today?
My cat had a cancerous tumor removed approx. 1 1/2 yrs ago (at JVC) She has had this black (not sure how to describe it) crusty substance under her chin, on her front paw and I recently spotted more underneath her and on another paw. Could this possibly be caused by her cancer if it has returned? Other than that she is acting normal.

Sarah Good morning-
It is hard to tell from a picture. The only time we ever had a cat with something that might be similar (and I too was worried about it) it was also on his chin. Turned out to be some sort of kitty acne that I had to cleanse. I do not know if this is the same thing though. When is your next scheduled visit? If it is fairly soon- maybe wait until then. But if it isn’t for a bit, I think I would call to get her seen just to be safe and to also get instruction on what to do. Best of luck!!! -

I have two cats who have very dirty chins almost all the time. I always tell clients that they should use glass, ceramic or stainless steel bowls (no plastic) jic it is an allergic reaction and that some cats just have dirty chins. For the cats like mine I do the following; I use the chlorphenaramine scrub called nolvasan that we have at the clinic, and the ketohex wipes (also at the clinic) and I keep the chin clean every day. If your cat is current on their annual exam with us I am happy to fill these for you.If you need any hwlp with this please call me at the clinic.

My niece had Her dog neutered. Is it normal for them not to give out pain meds for that?

I prescribe them. But not everyone does. This is something to discuss with your vet. Preferably in advance of the neuter. -
Krista Magnifico I should also add that I give an injectable NSAID to each patient in the morning before their surgery. It lasts 24 hours. Not all pets are painful longer than this. I have found. Cats especially bounce back very quickly.
My dog seems to be constantly panting. We have our A/C on 70 degrees and ceiling fan on. Should I be concerned?

My dog’s Nexguard has an expiration date of 3/2019. Would it still be effective at all? .There has been a lot of controversy about expiration dates not being true. Thank you

I would go back to where you bought it from and ask them? Or you can call the number on the box for assistance. Every product has a customer care number to help consumers. If you are a client of my clinic and you bought it from us we will exchange it for an in date product.-

I just read that plug in air fresheners were harmful to pets. Is this true?

It really depends on a lot of factors. Like which kinds of pets you have. What kind of fresheners you use and how the scent is distributed. In general most are probably safe. But some cats and dogs can be sensitive to the peuducts and they shoukdnbe used as far away from bedding and litter boxes as possible. Some pets just find them overwhelmingly caustic and pets smell so much better than us so it’s pribably not toxic to their health but too smelly for them to enjoy. My suggestion is to kee them away from pets and pet areas just to be safe. -

We do have 1 plugin air freshener in our finished basement, but I only keep it on the lowest setting. Anything higher than that and both the cat all the dog’s sneeze a lot.
My cat has these black, crusty spots on her chin. What are they and is it ok to put peroxide on them?

Sarah Based on what you’re saying, it could be kitty acne. Your vet would be able to diagnose for sure with a quick exam. If it is acne, it’s pretty easy to clean up and take care of. Also, I would recommend changing bowls to stainless steel or ceramic, and clean them regularly to avoid acne. I don’t think peroxide would help much. You can get a Rx solution to clean the area with and sometimes certain facial cleansers are recommended. See what your vet advises. Best of luck!

Laura Don’t put peroxide anywhere on your cat. Until you see your vet as suggested by Sarah, use a warm wet washcloth.

Krista Magnifico I agree with Sarah. Prob acne. Make sure you are using stainless steel or ceramic/glass feeding and water bowls and ask your bet for a safe topical cleaner for this. We have medicated cleaning pads (they look like the old stridex acne cleaning pads) that are safe to use and help open the pores to keep the area clean and happy. Please get help before these become deep and severe and cause infection. Let us know how things go.
What are your thoughts on the canine flu vaccination? I have to board my dog for 9 days and I don’t know whether to get it or not. We leave next Fri. so not sure it would be effective by then if I did?

It could be a uti, cystitis or your cat being blocked (ie urinary bladder blockage), which is a medical emergency. Please go to the vet immediately.
