I Have A 12 Year Old Dachshund Mix Who I’ve Had On Grain Free Food For …

I have a 12 year old dachshund mix who I’ve had on grain free food for about 5 years. He has had ear issues over the years but it’s been manageable and infrequent. I have been transitioning him to Purina Pro Plan for bright minds and all the sudden his ears are bright pink and he’s shaking his head constantly. I have read so many terrible things about the grain free diets but now I wonder if I made a mistake and he might actually have sensitivity to grains bc I had him on grain free food for so long. Is that possible? Should I just go back to the grain free food given his old age?

As I understand it (and I’m NOT a vet, but I’ve had conversations with a few veterinary nutrition experts about this since my dog has a food sensitivity), dogs are more likely to be allergic to the protein source than the grains. Chicken, beef, and lamb seem to be the most common protein allergens.

Hi! My Dog Is On The Hill’s Prescription G/D Diet, Which She Fortunately Loves. …

Hi! My dog is on the Hill’s Prescription G/D diet, which she fortunately loves. The problem is, she’s a large dog and required several cans a day which is becoming unsustainable for the cost. Is there a low fat, easy on the kidneys, liver, etc. food I could add to stretch the food so I’m not spending $500 a month? Thank you!

    Hello,
I absolutely feel your pain. It’s so hard to need something that is prescription only and yet also so expensive. The best advice that I can give is to talk to the vet who prescribed it and ask for other options. In some cases the vet can call the nutritionist vet who works for Hills and ask for help in finding or even making a suitable or almost as good as substitute. This needs to be done through your get though. I wouldn’t want to do anything that might affect your pets health without checking with them first. I hope this helps. Best of luck. Krista

Hi Dr. Magnifico. I realized the geriatric diet is chicken based, which gives Dottie hives. Would the liver diet work with some kind of supplement we could add to it? Maybe some pumpkin or something? I have been trying to find low protein, fish based geriatric foods for dogs with liver and kidney problems. Thank you!

    Hello,
I can call the nutritionist and ask. But I won’t be able to do it until Monday. Can you call me on Monday and remind me to talk to Sami about it. Anytime between 9-4. Hugs to you all.
