hi everyone. What is the general opinion regarding harnesses and ultra sound training clickers please

I have not encountered ultrasound training clickers. Can you share a link to what you’re talking about?
Regarding harnesses, my answer will depend on your expectations for a harness. I don’t like them for training purposes, as they can be used incorrectly. Corrective harnesses can and will change the gait of the dog, often permanently, especially if used when the dog is a young puppy…and without training the dog to walk nicely on a flat collar, a regular harness will encourage pulling.

hi Laura, thank you for your comments. Coco is a very strong Springer and I find it difficult stopping her pulling until she has run off some energy. She is coming 2. Any tips would be welcomed. The training device emits a sound only the dog can hear but I feel it cannot be good for her.

      1. Laura

Is it like a pet corrector?

What have you done to train a nice walk? I like Kikopup’s video here: https://youtu.be/sFgtqgiAKoQ?si=GSirkizFuc87tWQl

She’s a positive trainer who really explains things nicely. Work on a solid heel position first, THEN worry about loose leash walking your dog. And remember, dogs don’t generalize well, so you’ll have to work on this at home and out in public.

Thank you

What have you done to help alleviate this in the interim?

I don’t immediately run to the vet UNLESS this is a very young puppy or a very small dog. Instead, I switch over from dog food to unseasoned cooked ground meat and cooked rice, with a higher rice to meat content. I stick to ground turkey breast, low fat ground beef, and ground chicken if I can find it. USUALLY diarrhea will resolve quickly with this change…once it does, I slowly add kibble back in.

After 2 days on this, if the dog’s loose stool is not resolving, I call the vet.

Hi Laura thank you for your comments. I have been giving her boiled rice, scrambled and boiled chicken. However as there is a little mucus in the poo today the vet wants to see her.

Makes me wonder if she’s got something like giardia. Let us know what they say?

    Hello,
Your groomer shouldn’t be diagnosing your pup. Please go to your vet for that and the treatment plan. We cannot, not should anyone other than your vet diagnose a health issue or recommend a treatment plan.

  2. Sarah

I think I would check with the vet before starting anything. I am quite sure it is advice given with good intentions, but it would be smart to make sure that your vet is aware that there is an issue. They can prescribe something to help.

Hi. My Cocker Spaniel sleeps with us and has done since she was 6 months old, she is now nine. Lately if my hubby gets up to use the bathroom she begins to growl at him. She loves him to bits, why is this?

    Hello,
There are a lot of studies and articles on this. In general it is important to understand what the growling is. In some cases it can be annoyance about being awoken. In others it can be assertive dominance and this is very worrisome asbitbcan esclate. The best advice I can give is to talk to your vet and ask for a referral to a behaviorist who can help diagnose and assist in managing it so it doesn’t escalate. Also. Your dog belongs in a crate at night. It will stop the growling and remind them that they aren’t in charge of the bed, or your husband and thwart the problem immediately. This is not meant to be unkind it is meant to be an assertive protective measure. What’s the worst that can happen? Well. If it is a dominance issue your dog is staking claim to the bed. At some point he may get more assertive. What if he bites next time? Dogs are euthanized for biting and aggression so please assess this immediately. Some Dogs just don’t belong in a bed

  2. Sarah

Good morning. I just wanted to add a bit of advice. As a dog owner and lover, I feel it is very important to have rules in place for the health and well being of everyone. Some rules seem silly to have, but any rules help keep the pack order where you, the human, remain the leader. Bedrooms are at the top of my list for rules. No dogs are allowed in our bedrooms. This is an easy rule to keep since there are doors to help. It also helps keep the pack in order. Co-sleeping gives them the idea that they are on an even level with the leader. It might be a hard habit to break, but my advice would be to start changing things now. You would hate for the growling to go further and create a bad situation. If you still want your dog in your room, maybe a separate doggie bed in there? Dogs are smart. Your dog will get the new rules in no time.

Hi sorry to hear about your Cocker Spaniel…I too have the same breed. Cockers are prone to spinal problems, IVDD (premature ageing of the spine). It sounds like your dog could have a problem with one of his discs. He needs to see a Vet urgently. If this condition is left he could be paralysed, so please don’t leave him, Vet now. Don’t let him attempt to jump on sofas, go up stairs ect…keep him on the same level. Hope all goes well, please let us know.

Hi Julie, Took Holly to vet last night and he thinks it is arthritis and is doing tests. She had been on steroids for some time and was weaned off them lately so probably they were keeping the pain at bay. had a jag last night and I have tablets to try so here`s hoping. She seems a bit brighter this morning and had a good nights sleep. Thank you for taking the time to respond.

    Morning-
Is it possible she got into something she shouldn’t have? That seems like an awful lot of mess formamshort period of time. I’d take a look around to make sure- anything bad that she may have gotten into, I would give a call to the vet and see what they recommend. Hope it’s ok!

  2. Vivienne Barnes Post author

Many thanks. As far as I can tell everything was normal when we left. No cupboards left open etc. very strange. She was ok yesterday though not left alone, should I still give the vet a call?

  3. Sarah

I probably would. They may want you to bring in a stool sample to test. I would definitely keep an eye on her today, and if it happens again or she seems to be straining I would get to the vet.

Hi. My dog will not leave her forelegs alone. She is nibbling, licking and almost sounds as though she is trying to take them off!! Good morning? I am so sorry that your dog is having such issues. Has your vet done a skin scrape to test for parasites? That may help you find a remedy that will work. Also, is there anything in your yard or along your daily walk that your dog may walk through that could cause such a reaction that you are aware of? While it is nearly impossible to avoid certain plants and foliage outside, again if you can pinpoint which thing might be causing it, it will be easier to find a medication to help more. Your vet may also be able to refer you to a specialist. Best of luck.

She isn’t comfortable. This is either an allergic reaction to something or her way of managing pain. Cortisone won’t work…ask your vet for something like Betagen. It’s a bad tasting topical spray that can help healing and will deter licking. I would also increase her mental work to distract her from the itchies and pain. This means training! Do things that work her mind.

My Little Dog Had A Biopsy 10 Days Ago On Her Eyelid. The Result…

My little dog had a biopsy 10 days ago on her eyelid. The result is that it is Necratic. I know this means dead tissue. May this be because she suffered from immune system illness and had to be transfused. Is it likely she may have cancer as my vet did hint at this. He has told me to keep a very close eye on her and not hesitate to call if she shows any signs of being unwell. Quite concerning.

    Hello,
I’m not sure what your question is? I think it sounds like you need more clarification from your vet on exactly what they found and what the long term fear might be. In general I have found most eyelid masses are benign. You can always ask for a referral to an ophthalmologist for further clarification and help. Best of luck. Let us know what happens.

Good morning. Sorry your pup is having an issue. I understand your worry and concern, but I’m going to pass on a few words of wisdom…until you know the results of a biopsy, you can’t make a plan for whatever lies ahead and your worry will be wasted energy. Easier said than done, I know. But our pets feed off of our energy and emotions. I remind myself of that when I start to fret about my pets, and it helps me to keep thing in perspective. I hope your dog is alright?

I would. This won’t get better without some intervention, and the vet can tell you exactly what it is and what treatment is best.
