Amy, this is resource guarding and it is a strong instinct in some dogs — and has nothing to do with the amount of food or water the dog receives. You MUST go find a trainer (or 2, 3, 4). Yes, start with your vet’s recommendations, but don’t stop there. Find a local dog club and ask them for recommendations for a trainer that uses “positive reinforcement” techniques only.
