4 Months Ago My Wife And I Purchased A Chihuahua From What Was Supposed To…

4 months ago my wife and I purchased a chihuahua from what was supposed to be a reputable breeder. When we gor her she reeked of cigarettes bur we loved her already. We took her immediately to a vet and she is healthy and up to date on all her vaccinations but the issue we are having is wit a tapeworm. She had it since we got her. Our vet had treated her multiple times with both medicine and injections and she is on Sentinel for protection. Even had to put For-Bid in her food for the past month per our vet, but worm is still here. Getting frustrated and concerned for our baby pup. Anything we can do to help get rid of this?

I’m going to leave the medical part of your question to our vets, but I do have an observation regarding what makes a reputable, ethical breeder.

Unless the person from whom you purchased your puppy titles (as in, they earn titles through showing, obedience trials, etc…not just AKC registration) and fully health tests per the Chihuahua Club of America, they aren’t what I would consider ethical or reputable. Here’s a lot more information: http://www.chihuahuaclubofamerica.org/health-committee-mission/

Read through the links on the right sidebar. And maybe look into an insurance policy to cover potential health issues. Petplan and Truepanion seem to be two of the best…avoid VPI like the plague, they’ll just take your money.

We have had the pups repeatedly checked for fleas by vet and there are none. Both are indide dogs do no infestation ftom outside, dont even go outside. Been on Sentinel for protection since she was big enough to start and our 18 month old has always been on monthly Trifexis for prevention. Luckily even with continued presence of worm still is gaining weight and only loose stool was after surgery to spay and antibiotics were given. Just frustrating that we are doing all we can and still cannot get rid of. Wondering if I need to take to different vet.

We took two separate stool samples in to the vet, then while my wife had the pup there a small worm was left on her shirt by the pup. Vet said it was a tapeworm so I’m assuming that’s what it is.

But after multiple shots, multiple doses if sentinel, a month on For-Bid to prevent her from eating her feces and reinfesting I’m at a loss. Also weird that it goes days sometimes but no worm, then suddenly they’re back.

Plus had deurontinal more times than I can count.

If it’s prescribed by your vet, sure.

If not, I wouldn’t.  I would, instead, keep the doors and windows shut, blinds down, AC on, and run the TV or radio.  A trick I saw mentioned was pop a bag of popcorn (the all natural stuff, not the stuff loaded with butter sauce) and every time fireworks go off, make it rain popcorn.

I would also invest in a Thundershirt if you don’t have one already.

I would have gotten her to the vet today when they were open.  Sudden masses are usually not good…can mean a tumor or infection.

Thank you for rescuing!  I would plan on a vet visit once they’re open, just to make sure he’s alright.  All new pets should be seen within 3 days, anyway.

I’ve Had My Cat Ronnie For 2 Years, And Never Had A Problem. He Has…

I’ve had my cat Ronnie for 2 years, and never had a problem. He has been neutered and had worm and flee treatment. I havn’t changed his food or his litter. His fur and skin seems fine and healthy and he always eats his food. I just don’t know why he is doing this, and don’t know how to stop it???

Sudden changes in urination (location, frequency, etc.) could mean a UTI, ESPECIALLY in tomcats.  Please get him to the vet for a urinalysis.

My Dog Got Into Raw Chicken From The Garbage Last Night. Today He Has Thrown…

He should be fine. A lot of pet owners feed a raw meat diet and it doesn’t cause harm but since he threw up I would keep a close watch on him. Call the vet if he continues to not be himself.

Fresh, raw meat will not hurt your dog. Spoiled meat or a misplaced bone can cause all kinds of nasty problems. I lived in Homestead for about 30 yrs. I highly recommend Dr. Gilley. Best dog vet I’ve ever met and less expensive than the rest.

Well, the hope is that whatever made its way down came out. Jasmine once accidentally swallowed a sock. She threw it up and all was fine. So the question is whether he threw up all he ate or not and whether if something remained it can make its way out safely. I’d be watching him very vigilantly for signs of trouble. If loose stools continue, get worse, he keeps vomiting, refusing food, starts looking or acting ill, I’d see a vet asap.

Well thank you he is fine he plays eats and sleeps convertible

Until Recently, He Was High Energy And Playful, Despite Being Underweight. Now He Will Not…

Until recently, he was high energy and playful, despite being underweight. Now he will not play, and lays down immediately if not eating or eliminating. He has also gone from EXTREMELY affectionate to seemingly avoiding physical contact

I’d be getting him to the vet.  Sounds like he needs it.

  2. Amy Mize

Thanks I spent $5,000 on him at the vet since January I was trying to get input from other sources

Because this is a recent change, it’s warranted.

It sounds to me that he is in pain – the avoiding physical contact.  Have you found a Great Dane group?  Often things like this are specific to a breed and other Dane owners will point you in the right direction quicker than folks not as familiar with that particular breed.  I found a Scottie group on Facebook that has given me tons of help with my new Scottie mix puppy since my first Scot was older when I adopted him.

When I hear about thin dogs that won’t gain weight I immediately think about Exocrine Pancreatic Insufficiency (EPI).  This is a condition where the dog’s pancreas does not produce sufficient enzymes for the dog to properly digest their food and they can not gain weight no matter how much they eat.  The undigested food in their gut leads to pain and and produces very large stool.

Enzyme supplements or feeding raw pancreas (you need to get the whole pancreas and feed it fresh, I believe) is the solution.  Here is a link to a Whole Dog Journal article about this: http://www.whole-dog-journal.com/issues/12_3/features/Exocrine-Pancreatic-Insuffinciency-in-Dogs_16109-1.html

Ask on the Facebook page “Great Dane Rescue, Inc” there are a lot of Great Dane owners there with a lot of great knowledge of the breed

Thank you for caring about this wild reptile!  People like you are refreshing. 🙂

I would get the turtle to an exotics vet.  There are a number of things you can use but if applied improperly they can be seriously harmful.  It’s better to get the vet involved to ensure you’re using the right stuff in the right way.  If you don’t want to go this route, please contact a wildlife rehabber (your local SPCA should have phone numbers for you).

Thank you I’ll see what I can do.
