I’ve had him for 8 days and he is only 8 days old. Growing everyday, eating, burping, and pottying normally. Im keeping him warm on half heating pad with blanket and stuffed animal to cuddle in a draft free dark area. And I clean him several times a day. I know with newborn human babies unless something happens you can usually relax after about a few days. Are kittens the same way?

Jennifer Sacks As long as eating well and you are pottying him, he should be ok. Kittens are always at risk for fading but all you can do is the best you can. Make sure she is warm but also make sure he or she can get away from the heating source if he or she is too warm. Thanks for helping this baby.
we got bubba 3/1/2016 a rescue grey white terr mix about 3 yrs old he has patches of fur missing by his ear and on body by ribs vet. said should go away but it hasn’t…we were finally able to bath him 3/24 due to flea stuff on him vet said give him benitryl and put neosporian on it I have I asked if it was mange she said no 3yr olds don’t get mange

PK Dennis If your vet really said that a 3 year old dog can’t get mange she is crazy. However, it most likely isn’t mange anyway. With a terrier it is most likely an allergy. The best thing to start with is a bath to get all the spores and pollen out of his coat. Then a daily swim (do you have access to a swimming pool?) will help keep the pollen/spore count down on his body. Even a small kiddy pool would help. If you can’t get him swimming, then a daily rinse in a sink will help. If you are doing the sink/tub rinse try using 1/3 vinegar, 2/3 water – work it into the coat and skin and then let him shake and dry – don’t rinse the vinegar mix out. The vinegar helps reduce the itch and helps the skin heal.
If he has any raw spots, pat on some Witch Hazel with Aloe Vera (found in any pharmacy), it too helps with the itch and helps the wound heal.
Try Zyrtec instead of the Benadryl, it seems to work better – use the same dose the vet mentioned for the Benadryl.
Next, get all the grain out of this dog’s diet, that includes treats. No sharing bread crusts, cookies, or corn chips! Many terriers can not tolerate grains and this leads to allergic reactions – ear infections, chewed off fur, hot spots, etc. Go to a good pet store and ask to be shown to the grain-free dog food area. Then start reading the ingredients. You want to find a dog food that lists real meat (it will name the meat! ie. bison, pork, elk, lamb, salmon meal, turkey meal, etc) as the first 2 or 3 ingredients. Do NOT buy any dog food that lists “by products” as an ingredient.
It can take up to 3 months for a dog to grow a new coat – so it is way too early for you to see much hair on this boy, also he could have scared the skin with scratching to the point that hair won’t come back at all. But, don’t worry about that yet – it is too early so worry! I once cured a dog with terrible mange and she grew a lovely coat everywhere but on her tail – poor little rat tail! Then about a year later the hair started to grow! And in 30 days she had a lovely Cairn tail, just in time to be adopted to her forever home. I love a happy ending, don’t you!
Thank you for rescuing this boy – he is going to need TLC and a good diet to be all that he can be, but he will be worth it!
The signs of mange: terrible itching, on a scale of 1 to 10, mange is about a 20! Really – it is the most itch a dog or human can have! Look for little yellow puss filled bumps, or raised red spots, constant chewing and scratching, and him running his back and sides under tables and sofas, on the carpet, etc to scratch the itch. If this is happening, find a new vet to do a skin scraping (which may well be negative since you applied the flea stuff recently). The treatment is 3 dose of Revolution given 2 weeks apart. So if your dog is showing these behaviors, I would ask the vet for the Revolution and treat the dog for mange even with a negative skin scrape.
But if he does not show these behaviors, just wait – a good diet and the daily swim/rinse will work wonders.
Good luck!
Hi, my dog has yeasty paws n chin. A pet recommended topigen for tropical use. However she prescribe the mec to us without looking at our dog. Is it safe to use? Or should I just discard it.

PK Dennis How do you know it is yeast? It could be something else if a culture has not been done, and if the vet didn’t look at your dog, she sure didn’t do a culture. I wouldn’t try to treat this condition in a hit or miss manner, I would find a vet that will really look at my dog, do a culture to discover if it is yeast, a skin scrape to make sure it isn’t mange, and then make a proper diagnosis.

PK Dennis Oh, in the mean time, get your dog onto a grain-free diet – if it is yeast the grain-free diet may help greatly!
He has also been hugging his toys too and for some reason he’s starting to scrape his feet more and more often everyday, thanks guys!

Dawn Ferara, DVM The reaction after urination is normal and is the result of them trying to spread their scent to mark their territory.
As far as the mating behavior, it can be simply a sign of dominance but if he is not neutered it could also be a mating action. Getting him neutered can help with this behavior

Anonymous he’s a puppy, right? he’s humping. you need to train him to understand this is not appropriate behavior.
as Dr. Ferara said, the foot scraping is normal. get used to it. 🙂
have you started obedience with him yet? if not, please do…and while there, discuss the humping with them. i’ve asked a friend near DC for suggestions – she’s in Severn but owns a grooming shop in your area, and should have some ideas of good trainers to contact.

PK Dennis Get him neutered. Then correct his behavior – I usually make a sound, “Acch!”, then redirect his behavior to something I like, such as fetching a ball, or tugging on a rope. This teaches him that you don’t like that rude behavior, and that this other behavior is much better!
I rehomed a dog after his owner died – no one in her family wanted him because he spent most of his day humping pillows. I took me 3 days to stop the behavior for good. First I gave him a long walk every day – one hour in the morning. Then I put away all the things he normally humped. Then I watched him like a hawk, when he picked up a toy and even thought about humping it I made the sound, and asked him to play a game with me. He now lives with my mom, humping free! She gives him lots of walks, plays games with him, and does not tolerate any humping behavior. The members of the family that rejected him can’t believe he is the same dog.

Anonymous he’s a bit young to be neutered. should wait at least until he’s 6 months old or older.
-
PK Dennis I didn’t see anywhere in the post how old the dog is…did I miss that? I agree that it is better to neuter after 6 months, and before 1 year old.
-
Anonymous in another post she said she bought him at a puppy store down in Chantilly. i know this store doesn’t sell adults.
-
Angelina Wu Thank you, I think i can maybe correct his behavior, and I am already used to the scraping feet thing 🙂 🙂 He has stopped humping and now he is trained to stop doing that! Thank you everybody!
-
Anonymous Expect him to forget this training. You will have to remind him from time to time.

Angelina Wu This all helped, thanks to everyone, I did train him to stop and he does not do it anymore, thanks!

My cat was prescribed liquid clavamox antibiotics. What color is it usually? I left it out for one night is it still safe to use and will it still work? It is a cream color.
Dogs bleed during only the beginning of the heat cycle. Usually longer than 2 days. She may be keeping herself so clean you don’t notice the blood. All my dogs do this.
