Fish question-my fish has a white area on both sides of his tail, looks like something is on him. He is also sitting vertically a lot and hasn’t eaten lately. Any ideas?

Sitting vertically could mean he is bloated. You are either feeding him too much or he cannot properly digest his food.

Thank you Michelle p for answering. He is on beta diet so I don’t think he should have a problem digesting right? As far as over eating, he hasn’t been eating at all. I put 4-5 pellets in like supposed to, he usually doesn’t even surface to see what it is. Now he is laying on the bottom of his bowl like he is not feeling well.

I am not an expert on chickens, nor am I familiar with specific chicken diseases that may be endemic in Bangladesh. Some chickens thrive merely eating a wide range of food scraps and foraging for insects. Most chickens do not thrive when kept indoors. In general I do not recommend vaccines for any species. I have done some research to find out about poultry diseases in Bangladesh and have not found anything specific, so I have compiled some possible references, even one in India.

In general I do not recommend vaccines and do recommend having a relationship with a homeopath or natural healing veterinarian so if they become ill you can immediately get help.

Several good contacts in the US include:

    Hello,
Most of the time people do not vaccinate chicks. But sometimes you can treat with antibiotics put into the water. What is the problem you are having?

I Just Want The Best For My Baby. ..

I just want the best for my baby. ..

I use ol Roy and my dogs seem to really love it!

  2. Kasia R

I use Hill’s too, but not the science diet, one of the prescription diets.

If you want the best you should go online and research feeding your dog a raw or “BARF” diet – this is the most biologically appropriate diet for almost any dog.  Once you find local sources for the raw meat and raw bones required by the diet, and get both you and your dog comfortable feeding raw it will cost less than what you might spend on a premium prepared kibble or canned food.

But, it may not fit with your lifestyle — many people can’t stand the thought of handling raw meat, gathering the supplies, and making sure food is defrosted each day for the dog’s meal(s).  It is easier to buy a bag or can of commercially prepared dog food.  And some dogs have health issues or damaged teeth that can not tolerate a raw diet.

So, the way to pick the best dog food you can afford, you need to find a good pet store (one that does not sell puppies!) and locate the grain-free selection of dog foods (either kibble or canned, which ever you prefer to feed).  Then start reading the labels.  You want a grain-free product that has real meat as the first 2 (or even better 3) ingredients.  Real meat will read: beef, lamb, turkey, elk, bison, salmon meal, whitefish meal, etc.  Meals are the entire animal ground up and dried — which is a good thing when it comes to fish!

Do not buy anything that lists ‘by-products’ in the ingredients.  By-products can be nothing more than ground up chicken feathers — not a good source of protein no matter what the commercial producers say!

You may pay more for this very good dog food, but your dog will eat less of it per meal to maintain an ideal weight over foods that contain grains.

The dog only eats 2-3 morsels if any. Shouldn’t this food be kept in a glass or metal containers?
Can dry dog food turn rancid and put off a gas that makes it difficult to breath. I’ve been smelling this for months and its getting worse. Can this be unhealthy for me?

Here is a problem with expired food or with food exposed to air – it’s poisonous. The nutrients degrade and more importantly the fats go rancid. It’s definitely BAD for the dog.

I don’t know whether or not inhalation of the odor would be an issue to a person; theoretically you smell by exposure to “particles” so I’d say potentially yes.

I understand that your roommate’s finances might call for budgeting but this is a very bad way of saving money. I’m surprised the dog is still alive. There are affordable dog foods out there which don’t have to be past expiration date not to break bank. And leaving food in the bowl upt to a few weeks is just crazy.

Thank you, after I showed her your comment. She doesn’t believe it but she went and bought 73% hamburger meat, and cooked it in microwave with frozen green peas. I know dogs can eat peas if run through food processor. I had a lasa apso 28 years and a pekingnese 14 years and never seen anything like this. Im too the point of wanting to take the dog to a vet to make sure its okay. The animal seems happy, energetic but skin is dry, hair is course and shedding terribly.I’m just concerned as this is her first dog and she feeds it everything she eats the dog gets some too. I showed her the list of do’s and don’ts for what to not give your dog. The dog does go to the bathroom but doesn’t urinate maybe twice a day if that. I’m just so concerned for the dog. The owner thinks she knows best.

  3. PK Dennis

Jana is right on!  Plus I need to think that if the dog is not skin and bones, and is leaving food in a dish for weeks there is too much food down at any one time!

Dog food should be purchased in small quantities, stored in an air tight container and fed to the dog according to the instructions on the package.  AND being a responsible dog owner includes buying the best food one can afford — and anyone but the homeless can afford better than expired dry food from a discount store.

Put that food out for the rats and go get that poor dog some decent grain-free food, look for a pet store that does not sell puppies and pick a grain-free kibble that has real meat as the first 2 or (and even better 3) ingredients.  You should be able to get a very good kibble for $14.00 a bag.

Follow the instructions for the amount to feed per day on the package (based on the weight of the dog) and put only that amount down each day for the dog.  Put a little water on the kibble before you put it down.  If the dog doesn’t eat it within 20 mins than pick it up and throw it out.  Unless the dog is one of those that are so picky they only eat one or two bites unless hand fed, it will be eating its meals in mins and licking the bowl clean.

Once you have accomplished this it will be time to have a heart to heart conversation with your room mate.  Explain what the food costs, how much better it is for the dog, how much happier the dog is eating it — and most of all, how much better you feel not having the nasty discount food in your environment.  And see where it goes from there.

The reality is that you may need to find a new room mate if she cares so little for her dog to treat it this way.

    Fight the good fight!

  4. carolyn autuori

    Thank you, PK Dennis,

I will show her this comment as well. Yes, I will get a new roommate as Icannot sit and watch this dog get fed this way. Im so concerned if something happens to her dog while she’s gone, she will blame me. I’ve never let either of my two dogs go without the best food available. My dogs ate like princesses and prince’ s until I had to put them down. They were my children. This has open my eyes that everyone shouldn’t own animals! God bless.

He’s Peeing Regularly Now. No Blood No Strain. I Found Out He Got Tape Worms…

He’s peeing regularly now. No blood no strain. I found out he got tape worms again. He has diarreah because of it. I’m feeding him in small portions with the medication and water mixed in. He has an injured leg and won’t walk on it. I’m going to call the animal hospital and talk to them what to do about his leg. Its a little swollen. His paw has some damage and it looks scabbed. I’m pretty sure it’s from a cat fight of some kind. I’m not letting him outside anymore. Because of his diarreah he pees out side the cat box but it doesn’t bother me at the moment. We have tile floors. Have a job interview today. Hopefully I can get this job to help me Pay for a vet. Prayers for Sebastian please.

I have a female boxador who weighs about 40lbs.
She has eaten about a half a slice of dark chocolate pie.
will she be okay?
We live in remote Alaska, with no immediate access to a clinic. What do you believe is the best course of action?

If it has been within 3 hours I would recommend making her vomit to get the pie back out of her stomach.  Additionally, I would contact animal poison control and discuss this problem with them.  Likely she will be okay with just some gastrointestinal upset but poison control can give you better information.

Good Luck, I hope she is fine.

Even if you have no known allergies this sudden itchiness could be the result of allergies.  I would recommend a visit to your vet before your dog does some damage to his skin by itching.

    Good Luck
