Lewis had previously been unblocked twice at our vet center. About a month after his second unblocking procedure was completed, Lewis’s owner noticed that he was straining to urinate again. He was also crying and peeing around the house. He was brought in immediately and after an exam it was determined that Lewis was blocked again.
Lewis was scheduled to have an ultrasound to check to make sure that he was blocked and would benefit from having the surgery. He was hospitalized and a urinary catheter was placed and fluids and medications were given prior to the surgery. Lewis had the Perineal Urethostomy (PU) surgery to allow for stones and urine to freely exit his body.
Below is a list of the treatments that Lewis received while he was here, as well as their prices.
Exam- $50
Bloodwork/UA- $160
Unblock Procedure- $200
IV Catheter/Fluids- $90
Medications- $68.92
Hospitalization (2 days)- $120
Anesthesia- $215
Perineal Urethostomy Surgery- $600
Post Op Medications- $68.92
Total: $1891.26
After recovering from the surgery, Lewis did very well. He is continuing to eat a prescription diet for urinary care. He also gets water added to his diet and he has a water fountain at home to encourage him to drink water.
It is very important to discuss treatment options with your veterinarian in situations like this. Lewis has 2 other vet bills and hospital stays before the PU surgery. Please make sure to discuss treatment and your budget with your vet so that your pet can receive the best care possible!
Lewis is doing much better and hasn’t had any issues since his surgery about a year ago!
