Cookie is a deeper chested dog, which lends her to be more prone to GDV, also known as Bloat. Preventative gastropexy’s are fequently preformed during routine spay’s to prevent just such an occurrence.

*A gastropexy is a surgical procedure that is sometimes performed in large breed dogs to prevent gastric dilatation and volvulus (GDV), also known as bloat. A gastropexy may be performed prophylactically (as a preventive measure in a healthy dog predisposed to this condition) or may be done as part of the surgical management of GDV (to prevent recurrence after the stomach has been returned to its normal position).

We usually recommend spay at about 8-12 months old, so at 1.5yrs of age, Cookie is a prime candidate for both procedures. To ensure her safety, bloodwork is sent out to the lab to make sure she is well suited for anesthesia.

On the day of surgery, Cookie is outfitted with in IV catheter and connected to IV fluid therapy while awaiting surgery. She is kept under close observation by a team of Technicians in the treatment area.

Cookie’s procedure’s were both routine and went smoothly. Later that day once recovered from anesthesia, Cookie is discharged by a Technician when her owner arrives.
