About A Month Ago I Took My Fur Baby To The Vet Because He Had…

About a month ago I took my fur baby to the vet because he had a get red dots on his paws that seemed like any bites but he keep licking his paws so I got him checked out to be on the safe side. When we took him in the vet didn’t seem to care much about the situation and just told us that he was not sure what the case was but he thought it was possibly an allergic reaction to something outside, which he was only outside while we worked during the day, so we started keeping him inside all day and only let him outside for potty breaks. The vet went ahead and perscriped Chomps some antibiotics and some pain medication in hopes that it would clear that “allergic reaction” while he was at the vet that day he also had a skin biopsy because when he was about 5 months he began to develop a skin disorder called demodex so we were making sure that he was still clear… All was well everything was clear. Well here we are a month later paws still red and inflammed. My poor baby is very very sensitive to his paws and is constantly licking them. He sleeps a lot more than he used to! I am very concerned but I unfortunately cannot afford to constantly take him to the vet to get unanswered diagnoses. I have been reading up on this situation and I don’t want to self diagnosed him but everything in this article is exactly what is going in with my big fur baby I just would like some professional advice please help! content://com.sec.android.app.sbrowser/readinglist/0728213356.mhtml

What do you feed?  If there’s any grain or chicken in the food, try something else.  You want grain free and something with a novel protein.  I would also wash his feet every time he comes back inside and if this persists I would head to a veterinary dermatologist.

My parents think it may be allergies however I just want to rule out any other possible causes for it

There’s a VERY good chance it is, in fact, allergies…the question is whether this is environmental or related to food.

So, here’s an easy thing to rule out: what does your dog eat?  If a dry kibble, what brand and formulation?  Chances are you need to pick up a higher quality food with a novel protein.  I would try something with zero corn or other grains and a protein source that *isn’t* chicken or beef.  Ideally the food will have meat as the first three ingredients.

While you’re working on a food change, wash your dog’s paws every time she comes inside from the yard.  Give them a good rinse with apple cider vinegar, too.

Finally: involve the vet.  Depending on the severity of the reaction, your dog may very well need meds to get past this initial itchy spot.

try bitter bite. dogs dont like the taste of it.

This will not help the itch. Fix the itch, fix the chewing.

I Have An 8 Year Old GSD. Long Story Short: An Animal Dermatologist Is Pretty…

I have an 8 year old GSD. Long story short: an animal dermatologist is pretty sure he has allergic vasculitis.

Symptoms:
-Yeast/bacterial issues with skin (lots of licking, odor, grossness)
-Swelling in legs (possibly elsewhere but always noticeable in legs)
-Spikes fevers

More recent symptoms
-Eating dirt, big time. Not sure if it’s related to condition or what.
– Noticeable weight loss while we were away for ~2 weeks. Thought other dog stole his food when caregivers weren’t watching. Now thinking its from eating dirt. ?

We have ruled out food as the source of allergy problems. The vet seemed certain that it’s a local/environmental allergy as we lived in the area almost 3 years before this started. Also, he’s always seemed to have dry, itchy skin.

He gets relief for 2-3 weeks depending on meds. Hes been put on antibiotics, anti fungal, and a steroid. Two weeks on meds brings 2-3 weeks relief. Then we are back to itching, licking, odor, swelling, etc.

We did not take him back for allergy testing after the vasculitis diagnosis. It was just too costly at that time. I am hoping to get him into his usual vet very soon for his regular checkup but I really want him out back on medication.

Please tell me someone else had experience with this issue or something similar with their pup!

Thank you! I’m actually relieved that you’ve seen cases like this.

We will be getting him to the vet soon. I will try to remember to update when we do.

My dog is elderly and has seasonal allergies
(Unrelated, but he also has chronic dry skin and hip dysplasia)
I came home after a few hours gone and found that both of the whites of his eyes were swollen and pink, with in the past 2 hours they have gotten worse, I have given him his usual meds plus benadryl for his eyes, what should I do? Is this an emergency? All vets offices are closed.

My 7 Year Old Cat Started Breaking Out With Miliary Dermatitis After We Moved From…

My 7 year old cat started breaking out with miliary dermatitis after we moved from Arizona to Maryland. We have been to the vet several times. Skin test revealed no ringworm and topical flea medication caused her to break out more in the area it was applied. Tests showed no ringworm. We opted for steroid treatment as allergy testing and treatment was too expensive for us. Her skin cleared up for about a month, but now it has broken out again and appears worse thanbefore. The areas most affected are forehead, ears, chin, along the spine, and the base of her tail. She is also on Royal Canin SO Urinary food. How can we help her without making numerous visits to the vet? We just cannot afford to keep bringing her.

Could It Be Allergies That Cause This. I Have Been Giving Benadryl Seems To Help…

Could it be allergies that cause this. I have been giving benadryl seems to help some and mainly seems to flair up in mornings. Is safe to use benadryl for long term use also?

I have seen a few of my dogs do this from time to time. It happens once or twice and is then gone for months at a time. It does look like some kind of mucous, but I’m not a vet and can’t really say exactly what it is or what causes it. Benedryl, like other allergy meds, tends to work less the more often you use it. Which is why my vet says to only use it when absolutely necessary so my dog will get the full affect when it’s needed most.

My Husband And I Adopted A 2 Year Old Lab Mix (we Think Possibly Mixed…

My husband and I adopted a 2 year old lab mix (we think possibly mixed with Newfoundland) in November 2015. He’s 94lbs and we are his 3rd owners (first two owners were within the same family).

Shortly after adopting him, he started developing sores on his belly near his penis. They didn’t seem to ooze, but were bright red, dry, and scabbing over. He also was scratching at his lips and frequently shaking his head.

We took him into the vet who suspected allergies and suggested we change his food, removing any sources of chicken and beef from his diet. She prescribed 3 weeks of cephalexin, and we switched him to a salmon and sweet potato, grain free food. This was in January 2016.

The sores did resolve with the antibiotics, but the shaking his head and scratching at his lips did not. Two weeks ago I noticed a small sore on his belly again, in the same spot as before, and today I noticed there are now two of them. I also noticed that the inside of his lips seem to be very red (unsure as to whether this is new, or I just didn’t notice beforehand).

We can’t afford to keep throwing hundreds of dollars every few months towards vet care, so I’m wondering if anyone has ideas as to what this could be. I have doubts about allergies since the lip scratching and shaking of his head never went away.

Any help or ideas greatly appreciated

It is still allergies, just less likely to be a food allergy.  I would contact your vet by phone and inquire if they want to start him on an anti-histamine etc.

    Good Luck

Just wondering…..Did your vet say what is causing the head shaking? Head shaking usually indicates an ear infection, but it could also be from a rash inside his ears or fluid in his ears like otitis media in children. This very likely is allergy related. Probally not a food allergy but rather something airborne like pollens or grass or dust or maybe something like a brand of carpet cleaner which is a contact allergy. I had a Chihuahua once that was allergic to the brand of laundry soap I was using. Maybe you can call your vet and see if he’ll be ok with you giving him benedryl and get the correct dosage from him.

Did he do any lab work?  Skin scrapings?  Allergy testing?

I have been working with my pets.  It’s not easy to treat them when they have skin problems.
If your pet is still scratching and etc.  get a second opinion,  Also be aware of the surroundings for example is there mold in the house; how often do you spray air fresheners in the air; when you mop the floors are you making sure to throughly rinse them so that the floors don’t have residue from the cleaners.

Rule of thumb what goes up must come down.  In other words anything you spray, mop, clean make sure the pets aren’t around because if they are they will be breathing, walking,or licking it.

People don’t realize these factors are very important to the health of their dog.

-history, My Ex Husband And I Got Her At 7 Weeks Old. He Already Had…

-history, my ex husband and I got her at 7 weeks old. He already had a lab (approx 8 months old). We separated and I was able to keep my girl, he kept the boy. She has had 2 litters. The first, 11 puppies all healthy- the second, all passed away. (The litters were in no way planned) Not directly after the second litter but within a year she started getting severe ear infections. She was fixed and treated for yeast infections for the ears- she never full relief. After a couple rounds of antibiotics my vet recommended getting blood work done as well as allergy testing. Turns out she is allergic to 21 different things and is in the early stages of kidney failure.

I am taking complete care if her medical issues and spend a good amount of time with her. We go on morning walks, I come home at lunch and take her out, we go on evening walks, and she sleeps in my bed with me.

She is the sweetest pup I’ve ever known, but she is overly clingy. At first it was cute but now anytime I move, she moves. I walk into a different room, she follows. I go to use the bathroom and she sits at my feet. Literally, if she could, she would crawl inside me. Again, I love my pup, I’m just concerned this is not healthy.

Any advice??
