My Dog Had Emergency Surgery On Tuesday To Remove An Obstruction From His Small Intestines…

My dog had emergency surgery on Tuesday to remove an obstruction from his small intestines. He was discharged on Friday afternoon. He had 2 small bowel movements that afternoon – both were diarrhea or very soft. He is eating a bland diet of chicken and rice. He is not vomiting, but he has not had a bowel movement in almost 48 hours. He is also taking tramadol. His surgeon is not in today to answer if this is normal. Should he be taken into the emergency vet?

depending on what worries you, he may be fine.  vaccines *may* remain in the system longer than their recommended length of time.  i’d get him to the vet to make sure he’s OK and maybe discuss titers with your vet.

A vet check would be good..Even indoor cats should be vaccinated for minimum rabies vaccine–for cases like this when “indoor” cats escape, it is important to have rabies up to date.
Your vet can pull blood and get titers checked to see if they are ok w/vaccines if you don’t want to re vaccinate
    good luck!!

My Dog Is 12 1/2 And Had A Seizure. I Took Her To The Vet…

My dog is 12 1/2 and had a seizure. I took her to the vet and they said she has heartworms. Started her on the medication and the next day she had another seizure. I rushed her in again and they did X-rays to find out she has cancer(I’m not sure what kind) but it is on or near her lungs. They put her on seizure meds and it doesn’t seem to be helping. She rests most of the day and when I get her up to go to the bathroom or get home from work, she has a seizure. And now she seems to be a bit unsteady on her feet while walking. I took her for a short walk and she walked good. She has lost some weight, I can feel her spine very easily, but her stomach seems to be a bit bulgy. I want to know if this is all from the cancer or could she have possibly at something toxic or something that could block her to cause these symptoms? And is this most likely the end or is there other things like diet and vitamins I can give her that would help?

this might sound like a copout answer, but you really need to ask the vet about this.  i would be worried about the weight loss, yes, but a bulging stomach would have me very concerned.

if your vet is worth their license, they’ll be frank with you.  please, open a dialog with them.

My Beagle Puppy, 8 Weeks Of Age, Is Rather Underweight And Isn’t Gaining Weight As…

My beagle puppy, 8 weeks of age, is rather underweight and isn’t gaining weight as she should. She has already been to vet and been cleared but now refuses to eat. Have tried puppy milk formula, wet and dry puppy/dog food, etc. and nothing. The only thing she would eat after countless efforts was small pieces of prepared chicken. Any advice as to what to feed her that she may like and that will help her to gain weight?

I would try chicken flavored puppy food.  Otherwise, I would contact your local vet to be sure there is no underlying medical conditions.

Unfortunately it is very hard to diagnose what could be wrong with him over the Internet with those signs.   How long has this been going on?  Could he have eaten anything he shouldn’t have?   Will he drink tuna juice or anything?   I am not sure how close you are to one of the veterinary schools but they sometimes have student clinics that are cheaper or may be able to offer you a payment plan etc

  2. brie griffin

he so far hasnt eaten except for a few days, about 4 or 5 except one bite of canned food. i dont really know if he ate anything thats bad for him. he will drink water, thankfully. he seems to be losing a lot of weight. my mom said it could be a blockage would he get fat if it were a blockage?

  3. Ashley Carlson

You could also try calling local shelters or rescues to see if any of them may be able to help you.  Some shelters have crisis intervention programs or low-cost clinics.  Some may take him and make him better if you agree to surrender him.  I know that might be hard, but it could save his life. Check out http://www.nokillnetwork.org/ for possible options in your area.

  4. Kristen Vance

He definitely needs veterinary care. There are options such as carecredit which you can apply for online to use at local animal hospitals for as Ashley said maybe a rescue or shelter can help you.

You need to take him to the vet.  Try calling a local rescue, the humane society or even friends to see if they can help with money.

  2. brie griffin

sometimes my parents, im 13, wont do that, they dont seem to care or at least my dad doesnt, also my dad works to much to go o the vet with my mom

  3. Melinda Salmaone

I would see if you can borrow from someone ,also like was already said call your local shelters they might have knowledge or your local vets. Take some time make some calls . Vets may also discount their rate or offer a credit card through them or payment plan. you really need to act fast an animal not eating is serious and the ending won’t be good. So I cant stress enough act as quickly as possible. good luck to you and you kitten.

  4. Ashley Carlson

Some places may have volunteers to come out and help transport the kitten. Or if you have a local animal control officer you can tell them you have a sick kitten who needs help. Unfortunately sometimes they may euthanize the kitten, so you need to ask what will happen to him if they pick him up. Some shelters/rescues will do whatever is in their power to save the lives on the animals who come to them while others don’t have the resources and are forced to euthanize sick animals.

There Are No Clear Wounds And He Doesn’t Scream When You Feel Along His Body…

there are no clear wounds and he doesn’t scream when you feel along his body and legs, just at random times maybe when he’s moved or especially when picked up.

Being in such a rural area the owner (cambodian) does not seem to understand that his pet could be really hurt on the inside etc

The only thing you can do is try to convince the owner to take him for help.  Also, you can see if there is an agency similar to Humane Society or SPCA who can get the dog looked at

  2. Bonnie Lowe

Yeah I’m hoping I can do that

  3. Bonnie Lowe

I have also sent the vet in the area (found one online) a message to see if he can give me advice

  4. PK Dennis

It could be a spinal injury which is VERY painful, and it will need pain medication and rest to recover.

I know when our dogs were puppies, sometimes they just were to distracted with wanting to play they didn’t want to be “bothered” to use the bathroom.  We would stay outside with them for a little while and continue to give them a “potty” command, we used “Go use the bathroom” and we would just repeat it over and over and then when they went we would make a big deal about it and immediately give them a treat to reinforce the good behavior.

If she is home alone a lot, it could just be needing more attention. Remember, puppies have A LOT of energy. 🙂

    Good luck!

Thank you so much I will give it a try.?
