My Small Dog Just Had A Small Drop Of Brownish Red Blood Come Out Of…

My small dog just had a small drop of brownish red blood come out of her rectum, and so I took her out to potty and she had a softer stool than usual, but still solidly formed. My boyfriend gave her a small piece of pizza this morning, and after she had a gooey stool but, obviously things were more firm this evening. I’m taking her to the vet tomorrow to get one of her shots updated, but do I need to find an emergency vet now, even if she’s acting completely normal?

My Dog Smells Like Something Rotten Even After A Thorough Bath. This Began About 2…

My dog smells like something rotten even after a thorough bath. This began about 2 weeks ago and at first I thought he had rolled on something dead while he was outside. I gave him a bath promptly. That seemed to help for about a day. I watched him closely to make sure he wasn’t rolling around on something and he did not. He’s had several baths since, but no change… Still smells horrible after a day or so. He’s always had dandruff, but recently it’s been very excessive. The last time I was bathing him (he usually LOVES bath time) he whimpered the whole time like I was hurting him. What could be going on? Some sort of skin infection? He’s had a mild one before (treated w/ antibiotics) but nothing that ever made him smell like death! Included photos of his “dandruff” (quotations because I’ve never seen anything like this)

I bought home two 8 week old chihuahuas today, I was told they had been given flea treatment two weeks ago however, I have found fleas on them? What should I do?

Do you know what kind of flea medication was used on them?  I would contact your vet tomorrow to see if you can get them in to be examined for their 8 week puppy shots etc and see what type of flea medicine your vet recommends.  As for tonight I would give them both a bath to try to remove any live fleas and remove flea dirt so it is less likely to leave fleas or eggs in your house.

    Good Luck

    Dr Dawn

Thank you both – I’ve contacted my vet and got them booked in for first thing tomorrow morning. I’m also going to get treatment for my house – recommended by the vet, so hopefully can stop it from spreading. They are a couple days over 8 weeks and have already had their first infections, so I need to schedule the second injection, microchip and flea/worming plan.

Since Last Night I’m Detecting This Strong Odor Around Cookie; Seems It’s Coming From Urine…

since last night I’m detecting this strong odor around Cookie; seems it’s coming from urine (as I detect it when I sniff stains on her pee pads as well when sniffing around her rear end. It is strong enough that I caught a whiff even as she just walked pass me.

Here is the thing – it is strong but not really a stink and not anything I’ve ever smelled before which I’d know what it might be. Smells kind of sweet and the closes thing I can compare it to is the way my hair spray used to smell like (back when I still had hair and was using hair spray) when particles dried and mixed with dust.

That is very confusing and I don’t know what to make of that. I imagine infection would have BAD odor whether bacterial or yeast …? I don’t want to just assume it might be from the meds as assumption is the mother of all f*** ups. Friend’s dog was on chemo so when her urine reeked they assumed it was from the chemo. Meanwhile it was a massive UTI and went under the radar until the dog exploded with blood from her bladder. (potty accidents and other issues were chalked up to the original issue the dog had, massive brain and brain stem inflammation).

So I don’t want to make the same mistake and assume one of the meds are behind the smell when something else could be going on.

Thoughts?

honestly…i would get a vet involved.  sometimes they can identify a malady based on the smell, but they’d want to do further diagnostics.

  2. Jana Post author

I AM getting vet involved but no vet in today; doesn’t look like an emergency and tomorrow she’s traveling “to the other end of the world” for physio appointment. So trying to see if anybody has any experience or insights.

  3. Jana Post author

Quite sure it’s coming from the urinogenital area, as that’s where strongest when I sniff her all around as well as stain on pee pad also had this odor. Only slight actual urine odor mixed in with it.

  4. Anonymous

has she been tested for diabetes?

  5. Jana Post author

Blood work and urinalysis about a month ago. Clean. No signs of an issue other than the strange odor which started yesterday. No increased drinking, no increased urination, no other signs.

  6. Anonymous

weird. good luck figuring it out!

  7. Jana Post author

Weird is the word. It is possible it’s from one of the meds she’s on I just don’t want to make faulty assumptions.

Fish Question-my Fish Has A White Area On Both Sides Of His Tail, Looks Like…

Fish question-my fish has a white area on both sides of his tail, looks like something is on him. He is also sitting vertically a lot and hasn’t eaten lately. Any ideas?

Sitting vertically could mean he is bloated. You are either feeding him too much or he cannot properly digest his food.

  2. Hannah Snider Post author

Thank you Michelle p for answering. He is on beta diet so I don’t think he should have a problem digesting right? As far as over eating, he hasn’t been eating at all. I put 4-5 pellets in like supposed to, he usually doesn’t even surface to see what it is. Now he is laying on the bottom of his bowl like he is not feeling well.

The dog only eats 2-3 morsels if any. Shouldn’t this food be kept in a glass or metal containers?
Can dry dog food turn rancid and put off a gas that makes it difficult to breath. I’ve been smelling this for months and its getting worse. Can this be unhealthy for me?

Here is a problem with expired food or with food exposed to air – it’s poisonous. The nutrients degrade and more importantly the fats go rancid. It’s definitely BAD for the dog.

I don’t know whether or not inhalation of the odor would be an issue to a person; theoretically you smell by exposure to “particles” so I’d say potentially yes.

I understand that your roommate’s finances might call for budgeting but this is a very bad way of saving money. I’m surprised the dog is still alive. There are affordable dog foods out there which don’t have to be past expiration date not to break bank. And leaving food in the bowl upt to a few weeks is just crazy.

Thank you, after I showed her your comment. She doesn’t believe it but she went and bought 73% hamburger meat, and cooked it in microwave with frozen green peas. I know dogs can eat peas if run through food processor. I had a lasa apso 28 years and a pekingnese 14 years and never seen anything like this. Im too the point of wanting to take the dog to a vet to make sure its okay. The animal seems happy, energetic but skin is dry, hair is course and shedding terribly.I’m just concerned as this is her first dog and she feeds it everything she eats the dog gets some too. I showed her the list of do’s and don’ts for what to not give your dog. The dog does go to the bathroom but doesn’t urinate maybe twice a day if that. I’m just so concerned for the dog. The owner thinks she knows best.

Jana is right on!  Plus I need to think that if the dog is not skin and bones, and is leaving food in a dish for weeks there is too much food down at any one time!

Dog food should be purchased in small quantities, stored in an air tight container and fed to the dog according to the instructions on the package.  AND being a responsible dog owner includes buying the best food one can afford — and anyone but the homeless can afford better than expired dry food from a discount store.

Put that food out for the rats and go get that poor dog some decent grain-free food, look for a pet store that does not sell puppies and pick a grain-free kibble that has real meat as the first 2 or (and even better 3) ingredients.  You should be able to get a very good kibble for $14.00 a bag.

Follow the instructions for the amount to feed per day on the package (based on the weight of the dog) and put only that amount down each day for the dog.  Put a little water on the kibble before you put it down.  If the dog doesn’t eat it within 20 mins than pick it up and throw it out.  Unless the dog is one of those that are so picky they only eat one or two bites unless hand fed, it will be eating its meals in mins and licking the bowl clean.

Once you have accomplished this it will be time to have a heart to heart conversation with your room mate.  Explain what the food costs, how much better it is for the dog, how much happier the dog is eating it — and most of all, how much better you feel not having the nasty discount food in your environment.  And see where it goes from there.

The reality is that you may need to find a new room mate if she cares so little for her dog to treat it this way.

    Fight the good fight!

  4. carolyn autuori

    Thank you, PK Dennis,

I will show her this comment as well. Yes, I will get a new roommate as Icannot sit and watch this dog get fed this way. Im so concerned if something happens to her dog while she’s gone, she will blame me. I’ve never let either of my two dogs go without the best food available. My dogs ate like princesses and prince’ s until I had to put them down. They were my children. This has open my eyes that everyone shouldn’t own animals! God bless.

He’s Peeing Regularly Now. No Blood No Strain. I Found Out He Got Tape Worms…

He’s peeing regularly now. No blood no strain. I found out he got tape worms again. He has diarreah because of it. I’m feeding him in small portions with the medication and water mixed in. He has an injured leg and won’t walk on it. I’m going to call the animal hospital and talk to them what to do about his leg. Its a little swollen. His paw has some damage and it looks scabbed. I’m pretty sure it’s from a cat fight of some kind. I’m not letting him outside anymore. Because of his diarreah he pees out side the cat box but it doesn’t bother me at the moment. We have tile floors. Have a job interview today. Hopefully I can get this job to help me Pay for a vet. Prayers for Sebastian please.

My Dog Was Attacked By Another Dog And Has Bite Wounds. I Treated The Wounds…

My dog was attacked by another dog and has bite wounds. I treated the wounds with Blu Kote but what can I give her for pain that I would have in my medicine cabinet?

Sorry to hear about your dog. Please take her to the vets, she might need antibiotics in case of an infection..and I don’t know of anything you can give her for pain that is in your medicine cabinet…NO ibuprofen, that is dangerous. Call an emergency vet in your area and ask them, do not medicate the dog yourself, could harm  her. I am sure a vet could tell you on the phone if there is something, but if she is in pain and has bite marks I’d really get her to the vets asap. Dogs have a lot of bacterial in their mouths, wouldn’t want an infection to set in. Hope she is ok.

A Few Months Ago, We Booked Him Into A Piggy Farm, Where He Had To…

A few months ago, we booked him into a piggy farm, where he had to learn to behave, and not to be aggressive, when he came back after 3 weeks he was calm and showed no aggression. That only lasted for about 4 months. He shows a lot of aggression towards my other female pot belly pig, and my family members.

Sebastian Has Blood In His Urine And I’m Unsure What The Cause Could Be. He’s…

Sebastian has blood in his urine and I’m unsure what the cause could be. He’s about 9-12 months old and he’s never had blood in his urine before. Some of it had this grainy sand like stuff in it. He is NOT showing signs of straining when he pews inside or outside. He’s still a happy cat as far as I can tell but I have no idea what could cause this. We don’t have any money so we can’t take him to the vet but I will give her a call tomorrow. I’m extremely worried because we have two other cats. And blood is always a sign. Please give me advise.

Thank you that is very helpful. I will call my vet hospital and describe what’s going on and mention his diet and how to get some medications. We buy friskies for him as wet food and we feed all the cats a mix of everpet dry and new mix origional
