My cat has been dragging her rear and licking it excessively. She has not responded to deworm medicine or more liquid in her diet (incase of constipation). I noticed a white discharge from her vagina. She is fixed and about 7yrs old.
5 weeks ago my cat was diagnosed with acute pancreatitis with pli levels of 28.5. She’s been on prednisolone since then but her current levels are over 50. Is this drug causing the levels to be so high?
The cat had been showing up nearly daily. About mid-February I had to travel out of state. I made arrangements for someone to put out food for it. They never actually saw the cat and upon my return, I haven’t seen it since. The time we were away was the week when it stayed in single digit temperatures throughout the night. I had fixed up a box with a bedding and a light for warmth but it appeared to have been unused. Any advice? I’m really upset with myself that I didn’t do more to protect it from the environment.
My cat was trapped inside a fridge outside for hours before we found him. He was calling out & is still making very unusual sounds. He is wobbly & shaky and seems tired. Will there be an lasting damage? What should I do to look after him?
I have a very skittish and small cat that has been eating off and on for the last 2 weeks. She will come out for feeding but only eat a little but will revisit later to munch a little more. I’d say she is eating 50% of what she normally does. Nothing has changed- food, environment, placement, etc. I read how to safely put the cat in the crate, but our problem is just catching her. She only comes out from her basement territory for feeding and late night love when things are calm. She does sleep with us. I have tried trial runs to catch her but she either runs as I approach and darts through her basement cat door where she disappears or if I do get my hands on her she screams, wiggles, scratches and out of fear of hurting her or me I let go, those claws are sharp! In the evening during love time I blocked the cat door and tried to catch her, she flipped out. I tried enticing her with food and cat treats, she is too smart for that, lol. My wife can handle her more than I can and she too has tried without success. We have never been able to pick her up and hold her. She appears and acts perfectly normal. My wife is worried about her and if this continues, she thinks a vet visit may be in order (yet another vet visit, we should buy stock, lol). If we ever get her to the vet, she is their problem then, lol. She is 3 years old and other then when she was a kitten, has never been to the vet because of the above reasons. She is indoor only. Any advice on how to catch this wild crazy cat without hurting her or us?
She sounds super cute and a handful 🙂 Dont have anything to add, but have an injured kitten that im handling who sounds very similar to yours before she got injured. Didn’t know a drop trap even existed until now. i like it! Will try finding one for my next vet visit.
Three weeks ago we transitioned our Siberian husky from proplan to blue wilderness and since Monday he has had loose stool and last night he had diarrhea twice and the second time was real bad. What should I do to calm him belly down?
We changed from proplan to blue because we heard good things and we wanted to feed our 3 dogs better but now maybe not such a good idea.
i have to be honest…i used to feed blue wilderness. i LOVED that food…until they changed the formulation. it caused serious problems for my IBD-sufferer cat, so i stopped feeding it. it caused him uncontrollable diarrhea. my other cat also starting having bouts of diarrhea after the change, so i switched to Wellness.
maybe try Wellness CORE? we have had quite a bit of success with it.
Laura- that’s what one of my friends said too that they changed the ingredients. My husky could not stomach the blue so now we’re dealing with diarrhea bland diet and reintroduce what we use to feed them.
i’d say it’s been about 3 years? basically, when they started advertising heavily on TV and in the papers, it was immediately after they were purchased by another company. that’s when they changed the recipe…and it’s a shame, because it used to be a great food.
other options i’d consider: Horizon Pulsar, Costco’s Kirkland grain-free, Merrick (this didn’t work well for my dog but it does for many others, and it’s very affordable), Acana and Orijen (though these may be too rich…tread lightly here). if you hit Pet Valu up in Perry Hall, they should have free sample bags of some things to try.
Any diseases a dog can catch from a feral cat poop?
I would believe so especially if the dog isnt healthly, a pup or senior an or not current with vaccines, heartworm treatment, etc. I’d imagine so.
Tapeworms is the biggest risk. Many a barn dog have had a steady diet of all kinds of poop and lived to tell the tale however.
Good question. Glad nothing really scary is hiding in that. I’m not sure whether it’s so yummy or whether the guys wanted to “remove her marking” of their territory 🙂
Both cats used an extra large sized litter pan since the time both were in our household.
4-6 weeks ago Scout stopped using the litter pan and started going on our carpet. We found that she had a UTI. From all indications the UTI has cleared up.
We have a follow up appointment on the 31st to confirm. However, Scout continues to go on the carpet even though we purchased an additional litter pan. The litter has no fragrance. Tux uses whatever litter pan the mood hits him which irritates me. I have to think that this is a behavioral issue that perhaps was initiated by the UTI.
The incidents involve both urination and defecation. Could the cause still be a UTI?
I have a female pit bull terrier (spayed) that is 10 months old. Pearl generally has a great disposition and gets along well with everyone including other dogs. The “problem” is that she is showing less and less interest in her dog food when first provided to her. And it’s the meaty stuff (Alpo cans)! I’m not too worried because she usually eats it eventually but she often will wait hours. Yes, Pearl is spoiled with treats and bits of human food but it seems so odd that she would rather eat whatever we might be having (e.g. a french fry) than this wet, meaty food. She weighs about 55 pounds and gets one 13 oz can in the morning and one in the evening. She also has a constant supply of dry food in a dish but she just picks at that upon occasion. She has a regular place to eat near where we eat and spend most of our time and her Alpo is given to her each time on a new (clean) dinner plate. We have one cat that ends up eating some of the food and Pearl doesn’t seem to mind. In fact, Pearl seems to be more interested in trying to eat the cat’s plain dry food than her own. In short, she seems to like eating most anything except her own dog food. Thoughts?
Yep, fleas can find their way into your home . Many ways this is possible, visiting friends and family coming into your home may be coming from a home with pets that have fleas and the fleas simply hitch a ride with them. You can track fleas into your home if you’ve gone in a location where other pets have been, fleas can hitch a ride on your clothing and hop off when you get home. Fleas are great at location hopping. Also if you have carpet in your home and have had pets with fleas before, flea eggs can actually lie dormant for a long time and vibrations from a vacuum cleaner actually stimulate them to hatch… Lots of rental units stay infested this way.
It’s good to keep your cat on monthly flea control as a precaution because once you get them they are hard to get rid of. It’s easier to prevent them than get rid if an infestation. Hope this helps.
Indoor cats can get fleas. Often, though, people think that because a cat is itching that they have fleas. There are two ways to discover if your cat has fleas – one is to see the fleas themselves, often on the thinner hair of the belly. The other is to look for the black gritty debris that seems like coffee grounds, often on the back just up from the tail or behind the ears on the neck. To be sure it is not dirt, put the debris on a damp white cloth – if it turns red it is definitely flea stool. They suck blood, so their stools are black and the blood will show red when it gets wet.
There are multiple ways to eliminate fleas – holistic or conventional. Both require that you treat the environment (house, for an indoor cat) and the cat. The kindle book, Fleas Be Gone: A holistic veterinarian’s guide to natural flea control, will give you lots of great steps to remove fleas, some at almost no cost – 1. Buy a good flea comb and comb twice a day until 2 weeks after seeing no fleas and 2. build a light trap to attract the fleas to soapy water where they will die and 3. vacuum a lot – 1-2 times a day and discard the bag or keep diatomaceous earth in the bag so the fleas will not lay eggs or crawl back out.
The fleas can hitch a ride into the house on you or your clothing, though this does not often happen.
Sorry to hear of your concerns for this stray. Often cats will move away if there is a shift in patterns. So, this kitty may be a few streets over, being fed by a different person. Or it may not have been stray at all, it might belong to a neighbor that finally decided to get serious about being a responsible cat owner and has made this kitty an indoor-cat.
There is also the possibility that it got eaten by a coyote or Great Horned Owl. Coyotes take a lot of cats in the fall and during cold snaps in the winter. Great Horned Owls are starting families in Feb and so take larger prey as they prepare to nest. This would have happened even if you had been home during that time.
I think you did the best you could. Cats are independent thinkers and just don’t always fall in line with our expectations.
