I had a dog for 15 years, she Loved to chew apart a log or stick and this same sound of coughing would happen but only for a few hours, so I know thi IS a common problem. Thanks anyway.

My 10 year old chihuahua has developed a cough that’s been persisting for a little over a week. It sounds like there is something stuck in his throat. The cough is dry and sometimes sounds like honking. Could this just be kennel cough?

Anonymous I would get her to the vet. A persistent wet cough could be something related to heart problems.

my dog snoopy has recently had a hacking cough which i believe is kennel cough. I looked up dogs with kennel cough and he is making that exact same noise. My parents can not afford a vet so, i cant take him. He is also now vomiting little portions of white stuff, and he bites his paws a lot, no particular one but both vigorously. Can someone please help im scared he might die he is kinda acting tired, and staying under my bed all day, he used to be really energetic jumping everywhere
Can an indoor only cat catch a cold if he hasn’t been around other cats? We have 4 cats and we did move about a month ago. One of the cats has been sneezing, coughing, lethargic, and has a fever. How could he have caught a virus if he was in his carrier the whole trip, has never been outside, and only has been around my other three cats his whole life? (he’s about a year and a half old). At what point should I bring him to the vet? He ate some wet food tonight and is still happy to get snuggles, but he’s not himself. Will it just clear up on its own? Thank you!
I just adopted a Maltese and he keep coughing at night like a hacking sound and wanting to know what we can do to help him till we can get him to a vet next Friday?

PK Dennis How old is this dog? If he is an older adult I would suspect an enlarged heart. During the day dogs with this condition are up and round and don’t cough, but when they settle down at night to sleep they feel the pressure of the heart pressing on their lungs and they start coughing. While this condition can not be cured, your pooch can live years symptom free with the proper care.

Casee Brewer We haven’t took him to a vet because I don’t have a day off till Friday. He is 10 to 12 years old.
I need advice on my chihuahua she acts like she’s trying to cough up a hairball
I have a 12 year old Westi (male) who developed a wrenching couch a few months ago. Besides this cough his life seems normal–no problems with food, stool etc. He has this wrenching cough several times a day. What to do?

Anonymous what did the vet say about that cough when it first showed up? what diagnostics were done?
-
david maytnier The vet of course wants to give the pooch $1,000 worth of tests which may or may not turn up anything. I was hopine that someone ‘out there’ might be familiar with this problem and could provide more direct advice.
Thanks for your reply.

Anonymous well, it could be heart disease. this would require an echocardiogram at the very least, to determine whether the heart is enlarged. it’s not like they’re trying to nickle and dime you – they’re trying to determine the cause.
I’d take him to the vet as soon as possible. A cough can indicate many things other than kennel cough or something stuck in the throat. It can be an upper respritory infection, the start of a heart problem…some scary things. The best thing is to see a vet.
