I Spoke To An ER Vet And She Suggested Withholding Food For 24 Which…

I spoke to an ER vet and she suggested withholding food for 24 which I did from Sunday morning until Monday morning. Her feces was light brown and accompanied by undigested red blood twice. Today her feces is dark brown (darker than usual), but no undigested blood and I don’t think there was any digested blood (black blood).

My dog, Kayla, is a usually healthy 12 year old mutt. I checked her temperature rectally yesterday and it was 100.3. Using the pinch test between her shoulder blades, she does not seem dehydrated. I have also felt her gums for dehydration and they are just slightly sticky, but they are a normal color. I am monitoring her water intake and that is normal.

I also started her on liquid probiotics yesterday. Just a little mixed in with the chicken and rice. I realized that I was over-feeding her the chicken and rice on Sunday morning when I spoke with the ER vet so I have drastically reduced her feeding when I starting feeding her again this morning (Monday). I am just giving her a tablespoon of the mixture every couple hours.

My questions are when should I start to introduce her dog food back into her diet and do you think it is necessary to visit the vet? I know it is always a good idea to visit the vet, but last time Kayla had an upset stomach, it ended up being close to $500. Thank you!

The main question here is – has the diarrhea stopped? If it has, the problem might have “blown over.” If it continues, comes back, or anything else crops up such a lethargy or vomiting you do need to see a vet.

Thank you all for your help! I went to the vet today and since she is still healthy, the vet bill was only $150. I received an antibiotic and an anti-diarrhetic. I am so thankful that you took the time to answer my concerns. I thought I could get her back to normal the old-fashioned way, but you all were right and I am glad I visited the vet. Hopefully the meds will clear things up 🙂

If you have to ask if you need to take a pet to a vet, the answer is always yes. 🙂

Both of my cats have been experiencing diarrhea. The older one has yellow diarrhea and the kitten has trouble getting to the bathroom on time. I’m not sure if it’s because of the food or because they are in contact with other outside cats.

They are also still very active and show no signs of being sick. I feed and water them when ever I see that there bowl is running low

My cats were strays so they used to be outside. I just rescued my kitten recently so my cat might have gotten something from him. I don’t think I’ll be able to afford a vet because I don’t have a job. But I’ll try to feed them healthier cat food and if that doesn’t help all I can do is try to find them a home that can provide for them.

depending on breed, 13 is pretty old for a mid-to-large dog. Hopefully, the antibiotics will help.  Your vet probably has also suggested to keep him on a bland diet for the poop issues – boiled chicken, white rice. With him being diabetic, go easy on the rice to make sure you don’t spike the blood sugar.

border collie is 11 years old, he had TPLO leg when he was 6. He was running around the pool and he seemed fine, after laying down he had trouble moving. We assumed aggravated the TPLO leg, but he’s gotten worse to the point leg paralysis

No swelling that I can find, no neck or jaw stiffness, no visible discomfort. Unresponsive to prick test in the feet, all bowel/urination seems voluntary? It’s been two days of this now.

My lab had this procedure a few years ago.  When she over does the running around she’s quite stiff getting up and down for a few days.  We will restrict her exercise but she’s never been so bad that she couldn’t move.  I’m afraid he might have torn something again.  Once the tear happens, a dog will show no visible discomfort and will naturally distribute body movement to the three good legs.  I would probably have an X-ray done quickly.

My Girlfriend And This Vet Work Together At A Referral Hospital. He Says That…

My girlfriend and this vet work together at a referral hospital. He says that they are starting to see a lot of pets come in with blockages or other issues and many of them are fed Blue Buffalo. Additionally, surely you’ve heard about the trouble BB has apparently gotten into about its ingredients? However, this is mostly a battle between Purina and BB and it is not clear whether there are other issues here as well. Basically what I am asking is–should we change? and if so I am not sure what to change to or whether to take ingredients seriously anymore because apparently companies are being dishonest about them. We are also being told to switch to Purina ProPlan instead. Our dog has always been somewhat sensitive to his food.

I love your blog by the way!

I really appreciate your even-minded response. What is frustrating about this is that their product has been seemingly intentionally mislabeled. While we’re all affected by advertising, but when determining his diet I tried to avoid advertisements all together and focused on ingredients. However, I can’t trust that they are even listed honestly then I am not sure what to do. I am tempted to switch foods but my method now seems unreliable.

i liked Blue A LOT before they were bought by their parent company.

once the buyout happened, the recipe changed…put a serious hurt on my IBD-suffering cat with that sudden, unannounced change. they didn’t change the label for another 6-12 months, too.

You can try over the counter Benadryl. One milligram per pound. And a sock to cover it.
If you have a dog shampoo you could try to rinse the foot which might also calm the itch.
