is he aggressive? my female had this same problem. each time she bit i would take my hand and bob her bottom jaw. after a week she quit biting. and i mean. take your hand under his chin and swing up.

    please don’t listen to Lauren.

see your vet ASAP (today, if possible) to ensure there are no medical problems causing the biting.  this should include things like a blood panel for thyroid.  once your dog is completely cleared of all medical problems, contact a veterinary behaviorist.  the directory is here: http://www.dacvb.org/about/member-directory/

do NOT hit, knee, or otherwise act violent toward your dog.  this will not help.

  3. ashlyn hag

My vet said I should put him down, and since the humane society won’t take him because he drew blood, should I?

  4. ashlyn hag

My dog is a threat to my family and I am afraid that he will bite me kids, we have tried training classes, a trainer, and the humane society, anything else I should try?

  5. ashlyn hag

Also the reason my dog bit the lady was because he didn’t get his way

  6. ashlyn hag

Okay, thanks we had to put him down because he bit my daughter and he just gets so over protected, I know that there were other answers but my husband said their wasn’t we might get another dog do you have any suggestions for a mix breed dog that is easy to train and is medium size for under 200$

  7. Anonymous

That’s such a shame. This may have been a medical issue. Putting him down should have been a last possible resort AFTER having a vet do full blood panels and AFTER engaging a veterinary behaviorist.

No dog from an ethical, reputable breeder will cost auch a small sum. Please reevaluate your priorities with any future dog before running out and finding another one.

  8. ashlyn hag

We did have blood samples and everything done but it came out normal.

  9. ashlyn hag

He is aggressive and you should never hit any animal.

Kinda hate to go against the flow on this one, probably get blasted ,but here is what I experienced once. I had had a lab for about a month once and he decided to snap at me one day. I punched him in the nose and rattled him pretty good, i never had a problem after that. My grandpa used to say kick them under the chin hard as you can, but that seems a bit rough to me. Anyway, I don’t advocate animal abuse, but you could try this one time before putting the animal down…might just need a good “attitude adjustment” from his master. If you afraid to try it, then go ahead and put them down, because if he won’t change for you, he’s not going to. Sometimes a little old school works better, lol! please no one hate on me.

My 6 Year Old Mini Schnauzer Tore Her ACL A Few Years Back. Before She…

My 6 year old Mini Schnauzer tore her ACL a few years back. Before she had surgery we asked what else could be done. Our vet said either surgery (which cost us 2,000$) or put her down. Is this true? Are there other alternatives? And she may have torn it again(we aren’t sure). What should we do about that?

This actually kind of looks like ringworm to me, yes. Not seeing the red but seeing the patch. When JD had ringworm it looked like this (not red; normal skin color). Flat, not raised. Have it checked and conclusively identified.

i only give puppies one day of vomiting bile (that’s the yellow liquid) before taking them in.  they’re too young to go longer than that.  please, take her to the vet.

The Availability Of Items Has Changed So Much Since I Last Had A Puppy Over…

The availability of items has changed so much since I last had a puppy over 10 years ago. I never give any of my dogs rawhide, so I’m looking for safe alternatives that satisfy the need to chew, especially for a 10 week old pup. Nylabone, nylabone edibles, what else is appropriate? I’m looking for safe, and hopefully not extremely expensive. And what about giving things like carrots, quartered apples, pears, etc? Thank you~!

Hi Suzanne. My family gave our puppy many different toys when he was a puppy: squeaky ones, crinkly sounding toys, rope toys, etc. We always stayed in the same room when she played so we could make sure she was safe, didn’t ingest pieces and took the toy away when it came apart. We loved the Kong toys where you can hide a treat inside. It is good for your pet to work for and think about getting to the treat and to keep him busy. We didn’t use many treats but if we did we would only use those made in USA, dog food pieces for training treats, or other treats that are recommended by our vet (healthier quality treats), natural and with very few ingredients. Like people treats, many have low quality, unhealthy ingredients. I hope this helps and have fun with your puppy!!!

    Hi Suzanne,
Great question, I like Diedra’s suggestions too. Here are a few more….

To answer your question, yes you can certainly give chunks of veggies or fruits as treats. You are wise to not do rawhides or rawhide chews as they are really easy to get stuck inside the mouth. Kong makes awesome toys and they last forever so although they may be an investment, they pay off in the long run.

You can also buy marrow bones (they look like smooth bones about 6+ inches long, sometimes they are hollow sometimes they are filled. They are really hard and basically impossible to break. If they are hollow you can stuff them with peanut butter or other treats. You can also freeze ice (empty cool whip containers work great) put some treats inside the water before you freeze it…hours of fun esp in the summer.

    Enjoy your new pup!!

Hello Suzanne. I recommend antlers. Dogs/puppies love them and they’re good for their teeth. They are sold at any pet shops. I have 2 dogs and they both love to chew on antlers for hours.

Another great option is to make your own frozen treats at home and fill KONGs with them. One recipe that I make for my dogs often is really easy. Cook oatmeal, add pureed pumpkin and small amount of peanut butter and mix. Fill kongs with them and freeze. Oatmeal and pumpkin is really good for dogs and the peanut butter adds some sweetness that dogs love.

    Hope this helped!

  4. Guy Styles

What? Are these people Kong representatives? My dog will chews up kong toys in about 10 minutes unless it’s their thick rubber cone looking toy, she just sniffs at that.

More economical, and almost more fun are plastic water bottles. Want it to last longer, braid some rope around it, put a treat in it, throw it out when done. They don’t leave many plastic pieces everywhere, plastic bottles will just get flat.

As for treats, every dog is different. Meat always works, but it’s messy.
