Cat Unable To Eat Due To Esophagus Constricted

Attached below I have x-rays of my 12 year old cat. He has been having problems eating and breathing for a while. I thought that it was nasal polyps, but Dr. Krista told me that that was most likely not the case. The x-rays taken at his regular vet below show that he has something pinching in the middle of his esophagus. He can only eat a couple licks of watered down food, then walks away with a pained look in his face. I’m asking if anyone has ever had this situation with any other pets before. I will be scheduling an ultrasound at Jarrettsville vet ASAP in order to find out if there is anything that can be done to alleviate his struggling to breathe and eat. We are using transdermal prednisone to help with any inflammation. Also, his recent bloodwork has been great except for his glucose being a little high.

    Hello,
I am not sure if you are already a client of jvc. Please call the clinic and ask for an appointment. We can discuss future diagnostics from there. I wish you the best of luck

Thank you Dr. Magnifico. I’ll call first thing in the morning.

Hello! My Cat Has Been Going To The Vet Constantly, For Coughing, Gaging, Gulping, And Loud …

hello! My cat has been going to the vet constantly, for coughing, gaging, gulping, and loud breathing? noises. The vet examined him under anesthesia and said his throat was just red and irritated and sent him home with some antibiotics and prednisolone. He took it for a while but there were no changes. He mostly does the whole coughing gaging thing when he is exited. His vet can’t seem to figure out what is wrong with him, so i’ve been researching different sicknesses and seeing which ones matched his symptoms. I came across collapsed trachea. This is the only one i’ve seen that matched his symptoms and says it gets worse with excitement. What can be done to diagnose him with a collapsed trachea? I’ve seen that a fluoroscopy would be a good option but the animal hospitals around me don’t have the machinery to do that. There is a high tech specialist vet office about 2 hours from me, but it’s by referral only. Would i still be able to get a proper and correct diagnosis by getting a normal x-ray? is there any other options that could tell he has a collapsed trachea? he’s had chest x-rays before and nothing seemed abnormal, so that rules out some other sicknesses.

My Dog Is A 3 Year Old Terrier Mix And Went To A New Vet And She …

My dog is a 3 year old terrier mix and went to a new vet and she said he has mild luxating patella medial grade 1. No other vet ever said anything about that. She said he was probably born with it. Will it effect his walking?

    Hello-
I apologize that no one has had a chance to answer your question. I think your best bet would be to have a detailed discussion with your vet- and probably ask for a second option as well- to find out exactly what is to be expected.

    Hello,
Please call your vet and ask them. I am always very worried after I spay a dog if there is any abnormal bleeding.

  2. Krista Magnifico

No one other than your vet, or a vet who can do an in person exams can tell you whether or not this is an emergency and it would be irresponsible for anyone other then them to provide guidance just in case there is anything wrong. Hopefully it is just a little post op bleeding, but as a vet who does a lot of surgery I always worry and I am always hyper vigilant in monitoring post op. Please call a vet and have her seen

I Have A 9 Month Old Mixed Breed Dog Named Charlie. He Got Loose This Morning And …

I have a 9 month old mixed breed dog named charlie. He got loose this morning and I believe he may have eaten something he shouldn’t have. When I got him home, I fed him breakfast and about 15 minutes later he threw it all up. We then walked and played with other dogs in the field. We came home and I gave him a few pieces of ham. About 5 minutes later he threw it up as well. He now just drank some water and vomited again.

I will not feed him anymore today but am wondering if I should rush him to er or try to wait til morning and see his vet?

Thanks!

    Hi there-
He very well may have found something and gotten into it. I would definitely make sure he is drinking water- even if that continues to come up. Having said that, if your dog is still vomiting tomorrow, I would most definitely get in to see the vet. Hopefully, his stomach will calm down and he is ok.☺️

  2. Krista Magnifico

    Hello,
I agree with Sarah. I would keep a very close eye on him. I would also feed a bland diet like boiled boneless skinless chicken and rice in small meals. If he continues to vomit or us acting like he isn’t feeling well head to the vet. And in general I avoid ham with dogs.

We Have 3 Female Cats. Our 2 Cats, Margo And Edith, Are Now 3 Years Old And Grew Up …

We have 3 female cats. Our 2 cats, Margo and Edith, are now 3 years old and grew up together. Gwen is the 3rd, a kitten we rescued a few months ago. Gwen is not yet spayed but she is peeing on things throughout the house and causing Margo to mark her territory. I am here to get help with our situation and resolve the peeing and behavioral issues.

We found out the Gwen has elevated liver enzymes so she is being treated for that. Margo is on prescribed calming treats to help. Both older cats chase Gwen with intent as if they are annoyed or angry with her.

We have multiple litter boxes and plenty of places for them to avoid each other if they please.

Gwen is giving us a lot of trouble with peeing on clothes and random objects in the house and it is getting progressively worse…she is not yet spayed but we are at a loss as opposed to what to do or what is going on.

Can anyone provide some answers and suggestions as to why this is happening?

Thank you in advance!

    Hello,
Anytime I get a case like this I recommend a urinalysis be done. It is imperative to rule out a urinary issue. I also do a full blood work too. After that I talk about Feliway trying lots of treats and catnip and trying to understand what she is trying to tell you. They do everything for a reason so I don’t just medicate and turn a blind eye. I do talk about anti anxiety medications and there are lots of options s for this but it doesn’t change the fact that the case should be investigated thoroughly. This is a huge topic and in the texts book it can take up a hundred pages. There is not a one size fits all remedy.

Thank you for responding. We have tried Feliway wall plug ins and she gets a lot of attention but that doesn’t help. She’s had blood work done which revealed elevated liver enzymes but she it’s taking medication for that.
Is her not being spayed yet a possible reason?

    Hello,
I’m sorry to hear about your pup. When I get cases like these I refer to a university vet school. They are the best resource for finding answers when everyone else stumbles. I hope this helps. Good luck

  2. Laura

Going to second Dr. Magnifico’s recommendation. Looks like you’re in Washington? Ask your vet to consult with WSU’s vet team, and possibly refer you over there.

My Dachshund Lucy Is Now Starting Her 3rd Week Of Conservative Home Care For IVDD From …

My dachshund Lucy is now starting her 3rd week of conservative home care for IVDD from C1-2 with paralysis of front and rear legs with deep pain present in all extremities. She is currently on gabapentin, prednisone, pepcid, and methocarbamol. I’m trying my best to stay hopeful however she still has pain with any movement. The only time I move her is for repositioning, cleaning, and feeding. I can’t afford surgery due to spending several thousand at the ER vets where she was misdiagnosed numerous times. I will however do anything in my power to keep her happy, functional, and pain free. I’m fine with her ending up in a quad chair if that’s the best we can do. Am I doing my best?

    Hello,
Without knowing the doses that you are using I would say it might be helpful to see if you can get into a neurologist ASAP. I would also ask about increasing the doses of the meds with your current vet. Also acupuncture might help. Lastly I think that at this point you may have to consider rechecking xrays to make sure this isn’t a fracture or neoplasia. I guess I would suggest to regroup and reassess. I hope this helps. Good luck

It does help. We do have an appointment to see a vet acupuncturist but with the holiday they are booked until Jan. 13. We have consulted on Zoom with a neuro who read her CT. Thank you!

Is My 4 Month-old Puppy Suffering From Depression Or Something Else?

This is the third day without Atlas — Apollo’s littermate, alpha and captain. We lost him due to hemorrhage and dehydration. He just recently turned 4 months. Apollo hasn’t been eating and drinking water today. Was asleep all the time, too. Previously, he wakes up at night and cries so he comes to me in bed to wake me up. Last night he started vomiting and having loose stools. I can also here rumbling in his stomach, and i think is passing gas. Earlier that day we went on a walk and had munched a few plants/weeds on the way. He has also accidentally taken in expired milk he left the other day. Today the stool had a few blood patches in it. I’m worried he might end up his brother. Is he only suffering from dog depression, or is there other medial conditions?

This sounds very serious… the lethargy, the blood in the stool and loose stool. Not how a four month old puppy should be acting. I would make an appointment with the vet right away. The first fear that comes to mind is possibility of parvo… which can be deadly. I hope your puppy is ok.

8 Month Puppy Was Bit At The Dog Park. He Devoleped A Big Lump Filled With Loose …

8 month puppy was bit at the dog park. He devoleped a big lump filled with loose fluid a few days later where it started smaller and then grew to about the size of a baseball in under 1 week. I didn’t think the event at the dog park was was a factor because there was no blood or any sign of skin puncture at all. He also seemed to be happy, eating normally and still crazy full of energy as usual.I took him to the vet where they said it’s a seroma and should go away on its own in about a week. Ive been doing a warm compress but it doesn’t seem to be working to shrink it, and it has gotten even bigger and tighter 5 days later now. It still doesn’t seem to hurt him, and he is acting completely normal/happy. It has now been about 10 days since the seroma started, and 5 days since the vet. My concern is that it has gotten a bit bigger, and wasn’t as loose as before and is now a bit tighter/harder. I can still feel that it’s moveable fluid but just tighter. The vet didn’t tell me to cut down on activity, and I have been going on runs and playing a lot with him. Should I be trying to avoid activity? His harness is about 6 inches away so it doesn’t rub on it directly, but still fairly close to the bump. Just wondering if I should keep away from running/walking and try to keep him calm until it goes away? (not likely as he is high energy)

    Hello,
I consider every dog bite or fight an infection. And if it isn’t healed in 5-7 days I consider it a problem to keep monitoring closely with the help of your vet. Please go back to your vet or get a second opinion. Your puppy is too young to not have healed quickly and completely by now in my opinion. Better safe than sorry I always say.
