We adopted a 15 month old Akita mix recently. In the past couple of days we’ve noticed a “Hairy water balloon” on the back of her neck. We took her to the vet and the doctor said it was a Seroma nd drained it. It has since returned days later and now he wants to install a drain. I am not comfortable with that I feel that it should be able to go away on its own, after reading an article that agreed with my thought. He is eating, playing and it is not hot to the touch, just squishy. We want to do the right thing but don’t want any unnecessary stress or infection.

    Hello,
Can you please confirm that the photo of the crusted nose is your dog? This looks like an older dogs nose?
As far as the fluid filled mass goes is it on the top of the body, like top of the neck? If so why would it have occurred?
Of the mass is the chin area, especially bottom neck, I would ask about a mucocele or sialocele.

The only picture I added was of the back of the neck, you cannot see her nose. We aren’t sure why it happened. We thought possibly it is where her chip is placed. I attached a photo of her face.

So My Dog Has An Abscessed Tooth, I Took Her To Festival Vet And I’m…

So my dog has an abscessed tooth, I took her to Festival vet and I’m quoted over $1000 to do the surgery. I don’t have that kind of money!
Any recommendations?? Any vets on here can do it for less or work with me? She had blood work and is on antibiotics.
You can see her little face is swollen. Just popped up yesterday…

I know the hospital in N Richmond, VA does dogs teeth for $260.. and I can’t remember their name, but if theres one, there has to be more, right? and thats not just that tooth, they scale and clean all the teeth and remove the bad ones.

  2. Sarah

I would make a few phone calls to other vets in your area and see what they charge. I would also talk to my vet and ask why it costs that much, and what exactly does that price include. See if you can work out some sort of payment plan with your vet too- perhaps a few months of $250 payments with $250 up front? Good luck to you?

  3. Krista Magnifico

You can also come to my vet clinic Jarrettsville vet for a second opinion and price estimate. I’m sorry I cannot provide this over the phone or online without seeing her in person.

Is It Okay To Let My Puppy Play Outside In The Yard While I’m Housebreaking…

Is it okay to let my puppy play outside in the yard while I’m housebreaking him or should I limit his outside time to potty only? He really loves to be outside and run around.

If you want to let him play outside then make sure there are no escape.routes; nothing he can harm himself on….like stones he can eat, dangerous plants that will make him ill etc. Toys outside he can amuse himself with and so on. Leave a door open so he can come inside to you when he wants to. Keep a constant eye out every few minutes to make sure he’s alright. Give it a go and see how it works out. Good to know a dog owner cares about her puppy’s wellbeing and enjoyment. Best of luck.

I think my dog may have worms. We collected her from kennels after two weeks and her appetite is insatiable. She has also been dragging her bottom along the floor. She is an eight year old Cocker Spaniel and in good spirits.

Call your vet and get an appointment. Bring in a stool sample for them. They will be able to diagnose and treat for the right thing.

Yes anal Glands which the vet cleared. He also gave her worm treatment we were there. Thank you.

My 14 Week Old Puppy Found A Dead Bird And Picked It Up In His…

My 14 week old puppy found a dead bird and picked it up in his mouth. He only had it for a minute before I got it out. Is this something I should be worried about or do something about? I know dead birds can carry diseases. I don’t know how long it had been dead but it didn’t look like it was very long.

Hi perhaps just watch your puppy very carefully for the next few days. If you see anything at all, sickness, loose stools….lethargy or anything else you are concerned about then take him to your Vet. I would make sure he hasn’t picked up fleas or lice from the dead bird too. You could always phone your Vet for advice also. Hope all is well with your puppy.

  2. Jennifer Taylor

When my dogs have found dead animals I usually run it by my Vet just to be on the safe side. In all but one case my vet wasn’t too terribly concerned, the incident that concerned her was a scrap with a possum, we opted to boost our dog’s rabies vaccine. Best of luck!

Hi pawbly friends-
I was just walking my dogs and we came across a crow. It is somehow injured, though I don’t really know what is wrong with it, other than it seems unable to fly. It flaps both wings, and can run away from us. I put the boys in a sir stay, and scooped the bird up carefully. He/she is resting in a paper- lined box on my front porch at the moment as I am really not sure at all what to do.

Thanks. Sadly, the crow did not make it through the night. It’s strange, we found a different bird Tuesday with the same thing. I wonder if someone in the area sprayed something on their lawn or farm fields….

  2. Jennifer Taylor

Hi Sarah, If you are in Jarrettsville I would contact Phoenix Wildlife, they can usually help with birds! We are in Jarrettsville too and found an injured crow yesterday afternoon in a neighbors yard. I wanted to give him a little time to see if perhaps he was just stunned, when we went back to check on him he was gone….I wonder if it was the same crow! If you need the number for Phoenix Wildlife please let me know!

Is It Okay For My Puppy To Chew On Sticks In My Yard?

Is it okay for my puppy to chew on sticks in my yard?

I wouldn’t. Sticks can get stuck in the mouth.

  2. Sarah

I agree with Laura, however I know it’s hard to watch them all of the time? If you catch him eating a stick, try replacing it with a chew toy.

  3. Jennifer Taylor

I do not let puppies chew on sticks. After adoption one of my prior foster puppies had a piece of a stick become lodged in the soft tissue in his mouth causing infection. He had to have surgery to remove it. I stick with appropriate chew toys for puppies and usually keep one or two in the yard for them to play with too. Best of luck and enjoy that puppy!

  4. Jayden Cihlar

It could be a sign of teething but I’d say no. Don’t let the puppy do it for infections or damage the new growing teeth

I Have A 13 Week Old Puppy. He’s Been Fine But He Just Threw Up…

I have a 13 week old puppy. He’s been fine but he just threw up his food and now he’s quivering. He’s urinating fine and he had a good bowel movement not too long ago. I’m concerned. What should I do?

If he’s only vomited once, I think I’d wait and see. If he vomits more, I’d be on the horn with the vet.

  2. Jennifer Taylor

I would keep an eye on him for now. If his mood changes (i.e. lethargic, depressed, etc.) vomiting continues or if he starts having diarrhea I would take him to see a vet.

I Just Watched Your Video About The High Er Costs And I Am Enraged As…

I just watched your video about the high er costs and I am enraged as well.
A few years ago I called to find out an estimate for a possible C section on my Newf as she had a stuck puppy. They first said they had to see the dog to give an estimate, but when I pressed them they gave me an estimate of 2-6 K! This is highway robbery, especially since I KNOW from folks I know who have worked there that the vets there are inexperienced just out of school vets who have no business working on their own at an overnight clinic.
How can a surgery that would cost around 1-1.5K in the daytime cost 6K at night?
I ended up driving way too fast 140 miles to another vet clinic who does their own er. They got the puppy out without a c section. I doubt the local er would have been able to do that, so not only did I save my bitch from unneccesary surgery, but I saved thousands of dollars.
Besides the outrageous prices these clinics charge, I think it is criminal that they hire inexperienced vets to be on their own at an overnight clinic. To me that is malpractice.
