My Brother Just Returned From His Mission A Few Days Ago. While He Was Gone…

My brother just returned from his mission a few days ago. While he was gone we adopted a border collie mix puppy, she’s now around a year and a half years old.

She has interacted with people at the park and gets along with most family members when visiting at their place. This her first time having a someone she doesn’t know at home like this, usually have her away from visitors.

She is not getting a long with my brother, she’s constantly barking at him. When he offers one of her favorite treats she tries to hide behind someone she trusts or she runs down and hides in the basement. My brother is getting really frustrated with her.

Expecting that this is going to take a while. Hoping that she gets used to him/desensitized to him over the next few weeks. Any advice would be appreciated.

In what way is she not getting along with him? My first thought is that he calmly go about his business and not attempt to interact with her. Let the dog approach your brother for interaction. Is he wearing a ball cap, something that she’s not used to? Everyone needs to be calm and act normally.

Hello, this is perfectly normal. Dogs adapt, and it may take time. Good luck!

    Thanks!

She has been getting better. She isn’t barking as much, but tends to avoid him whenever she can now. Want her to get used to being around him, but don’t want to force it. Now she usually hides downstairs or in one of the bedrooms. Gets really nervous and wants to be close to someone she knows when he is around.

She does bark and get snappy when he’s interacting with one of us, she thinks she is protecting us from him?

    Slow going, but are improvements.

Hi Pawbly, my sisters shih tzu Tobee has been visiting us for the week and his eye is getting a bit ‘weepy.’ I know these dogs can get eye problems easily. I’ve attached a photo. Do you think this weepy eye looks serious? Thanks.

Hello, I don’t think it looks too bad now. Just clean it out with a tissue every time this happens. If it gets any worse I would bring him to the vet. Good luck!

Thanks Madelyn, my sister was worried because my (well intentioned) mom has another Shih Tzu, Bentlee, that got an eye infection that started like that and although they kept it very clean, it ended up rupturing because the infection wasn’t being treated. After trying to initially save Bentlee’s eye, and a heavy bill from the emergency clinic, My mother ended up having to have the eye removed. (I didn’t even know they had dog ophthalmologists!) Bentlee is happy and fine these days, but now I help my mother keep the hair trimmed away from the good eye. We kept Tobee’s eye cleaned for the last few days. I’m going to check in with my sister to see how it’s going.

Thanks Doc! Looks like my sister was able to get him seen by the vet. Luckily the eye isn’t scratched so he’s on some eye medication and antibiotics to clear it up. Thanks for the help!

I Have An American Bulldog Who Is Almost 2 Years Old. Despite Training, He Is…

I have an American Bulldog who is almost 2 years old. Despite training, he is very aggressive towards other dogs. He was attacked by a pit bull, on our property, before he was a year old and every since will not tolerate any other dogs or any kind of animals for that matter. We have paid quite a bit for training to try and help him socialize but after a while he is back to his old self. No one will board him and we can’t take him anywhere that has a lot of people or other animals. He’s great at home and wonderful with our children, so I am at a loss s to what to do. He also has pretty bad hip problems and is in pain a lot if he gets a lot of exercise. I love him so much, as does my family, but I want to do the right, humane thing. Help.

Hello, as an extreme animal lover, I say no, try to train and comfort as much as you can, but I don’t know you and I can’t tell you what to do. That’s the last case scenario. Good luck!

    Hi Krista, I totally agree.

  3. Crystal Williams

We have done two extensive training courses for his aggression . One two week program and one five week, away from home program.

Honestly I know this is mange because I have worked at an animal hospital and seen it before. Its not that rare in Southern California and both me and my mom got scabbies bites from sleeping with the cat. Skin scraping doesn’t usually find anything in more than fifty percent of cases. My cat is missing huge portions of his coat. It has gotten better with lime dipping but he is just too strong to keep doing this to him for six weeks plus the other animals. I understand that you can’t prescribe meds online but you should probably mention this on the website homepage to save people from wasting their time…

I’m guessing you’re inexperienced with regards to breeding and lack a breed mentor to help you…that means you need to call the vet who has monitored the dam throughout her pregnancy.

  2. Lisa Pfab

Please go see a vet. I know money is sometimes an issue, but try to apply for care credit, or something to get your dog looked at. Is she eating? Is she Drinking? Are her gums nice and pink or white looking? can she walk?

    Please call a vet!
