Should professional dog trainers use E collars for training if needed? And classic leach and collar training with some positive training.

PK Dennis Dr. Krista has it right with this one — all it takes to be a “professional” dog trainer is call yourself one. While there are certification programs out there no laws really address this. Your best bet is to meet the trainer (without your dog!) and watch how he/she conducts training of other people’s dogs. Do the dogs look happy? Do you feel okay with the methods used? Would you treat a 2 year old child the way the dog trainer treats the dogs he/she is working?
For example, when I interact with 2 year old children I try to use positive reinforcement — but I also will smack a butt if the child hurts or endangers himself or others. I don’t believe a “time out” solves every problem.
You are in the land of Cesar Milan — and Cesar does use E collars for some aggressive dogs, but the ones he uses vibrate, they don’t give a shock (at least that is my understanding of the collars he uses). Some E collars vibrate, some shock, some make a noise, some spray citrus fragrance (which dogs don’t like!). All are negative reinforcement to one degree or another.
Dogs learn faster and are happier with positive reinforcement. The fact that you even asked this question leads me to believe that you are uncomfortable at some level with the idea of an E collar. It is best to keep looking for a trainer that earns your confidence from the very beginning. Leash and collar training with “some” positive training doesn’t sound like a good route to build trust between you and your pooch. Someone that uses mostly all positive training, all of the time will probably give you better results.
i have 2 quinea pigs one of each sex who havent met yet but are in cages next to each other
the male is due to have stitches out tuesday and i was going to introduce them wednesday
but they are current biting at their cage bars trying to get to each other and touching noses through the bar
should i introduce them now or how do i stop them biting the bars
My dog has really dry itchy skin, i wanted to start giving him human grade fish oil capsules to see if it would help. What would the correct dosage be ? He is 83 pounds and currently on a raw diet (Mountain Dog Food)

Kelly Furgason Hi Ashley,
Well, first you need to figure out why your dog has itchy and dry skin. It may be allergies to foods or the surroundings or fleas…Best to get to your vet to have them diagnose what is wrong first. Then, you can treat the root cause of the itchy skin. No sense in spending time and money one what you think may be helpful.

Ashley Watkins the vet just keeps giving him medication saying its a skin infection.

In her old home she was bullied by other dogs so I’m not sure what it is. It’s not fleas or ticks.

Kelly Furgason Hello,
It sounds like a trip to your vet for an exam is in order. Lumps and other issues should be checked out by a vet. It is impossible to know for certain if lumps are skin related or from fighting without seeing your dog and knowing it’s history. If you can ask the previous owner about what is going on.
~good luck!

I have a 35 lb beagle. She ate what appeared to be a chewed up piece of gum stuck to the sidewalk about an hour ago. Is this is a situation where the after hours vet should be called?

Anonymous going to agree 100% with Diedra. because you don’t know if this gum had xylitol (which is toxic) in it, best to get to the vet NOW.

Dawn Simon Thanks. I am in a small town & have no emergency vets anywhere close, only option is to call one at home. In the meantime I have read about amounts of xylitol that are toxic for a dog this size & most likely she would need to eat more than one piece (especially chewed up as much of xylitol should be gone). I will call my vet in the morning. I appreciate the advice, just difficult to follow in these specific circumstances.
My cat has had a scab on her nose for a couple months. I took her to the vet and he tested her for mites. Came back negative. He told me to give her 4 doses of revolution every other week to see if it would clear up. It looked like it was clearing up but today she seemed out of it (she’s a outdoor cat). I went outside and her nose was worse than ever! Scabby and super swollen. It looked like she had no nose. I took her back to the vet. She had fever of 105. I’m waiting on blood work. Since being home her nose started dripping blood and a white sack appeared and is getting bigger and bigger. Any idea what this could be? I’m so scared she’s going to die tonight :'(
More information?
What dog do you have now, breed and male or female? and what dog are you introducing …again breed..male or female?
also what ages are both dogs?
I have a 6 year Pitt bull female and add a 2 year Pitt bull female
Since you have multiple dogs it may be easier, because they are used to other dogs. Do it in a fenced area, I would say outside, with plenty of room. Is the new dog a puppy? That will really change things. Most adult dogs realize a puppy is a puppy and not a threat to the pack dominance order, but that it will grow up in the pack and will fall into the pack order naturally. A full grown dog is a different story. Which ever of your dogs is the dominant one will feel a threat, so you need to let them be introduced I think one at a time, with the dominant one going first. Let them smell each others butts, its what they do. I would have the new dog on a leash, and if your current dog is trust worthy and listens very well, let that dog be off leash, only in an enclosed area. Do not do it in a crowded space, as they will feel confined and that will not help.
I am by far not an expert, but I have had at least three dogs for a long time, and have introduced someone to our pack on several occasions.
It really depends on how well trained your current dogs are as well.
Good luck!
I think Eddie has a 6 year old female and wants to add a 2 year old female? You may have problems with 2 Pitbull bitches….I would imagine they can be same breed agressive. You would need to introduce them on neutral ground and let them get to know each other first. Make sure they each have their own space at home if they need it….separate feeding bowls, beds ect. Plus I would make sure you can put them in different rooms if necessary. It depends on the temperament of both the dogs aa to how they will get along. Good luck.
