My Dog Sira Had A Cruciate Ligament Tear Of The Right Knee And Had ACL…

My dog Sira had a cruciate ligament tear of the right knee and had ACL done with complete meniscectomy on 1/21/15. After 2 months the knee felt swollen and all of a sudden there was a blister that broke open and release a LOT of almost clear fluid and the “swelling” was gone. The little blister wound healed but after 6 weeks swelling/fluid on the outside of the knee joint and the little cap opened up and again fluid oozing out. The vet examined the fluid, even cultured it and there was some inflammation but no infection. For almost 2 weeks the knee looked better, skin color was pink but all of a sudden this changed. The skin looked darker with every hour, turning purplish and again fluid collected under the skin. Again to the vet who tried to drain the fluid out with a syringe but with not much success. The fluid had become more bloody. My dog was put on previcox and baytril. But again after it looked better for a while one morning the certain (blister) spot looked a bit different and 5 hours later it was blueish – pink marbled and 5 more hours later it broke open and again this viscous discharge. What is the cause? Could it be an allergic reaction to the nylon line or the stainless steel crimps that were used for the ACL? How likely is this? I got the recommendation from another vet whom I consulted while the surgeon was on vacation to have the nylon line and metal crimps removed and hopefully enough scar tissue has developed by now so that the knee is stabilized by it. I have spend now close to $3000 on exams, surgery and meds. To remove all that what has been put in to stabilize the knee joint seems like a waste but what good does it do if it doesn’t heal? I cannot let it go on like that and risk an infection of the knee, can I? Has someone seen such a reaction after an ACL surgery? Does this look like an allergic reaction? Is removing the lines and crimps the right next step?

It might be an allergic reaction, but I would find a better vet.

Hello! I Have A One Year Old Yorkie. He Has Been Having Some Problems Recently…

Hello! I have a one year old Yorkie. He has been having some problems recently – he started coughing and it sounds like he has something stuck in his throat. This gets worse when he is excited about something or when he is about to be taken for a walk. He vomitted only once and after that the coughing got more severe. I took him to two vets – one told me that he has tonsilitis and prescribed some antibiotics. The situation got better for several days but now he is coughing again. When we visited him for the second time, he recommended having my dog’s tonsils removed. The other one told me that my dog had a problem with an elongated soft palate which I found very strange for I didn’t know that Yorkies can have such problems. Also, he made this diagnosis just by listening to him coughing, without any kind of examination. Other than coughing, my dog is active and hasn’t lost his appetite. Can you please help us?

i would be concerned about her thyroid, depending on age and breed.  when was her last bloodwork?

  2. Ashley Connor

She is roughly 9-10 yrs old and sorry but what do u mean by bloodwork

  3. Anonymous

i mean your vet takes blood from your dog (this should be done annually) and screened for any abnormalities which would indicate illness.

if you haven’t had this done in the past 6 months, i’d get it done today.

She also has a little diarreah.I am taking her to vets tomorrow but would like an idea of what to expect it to be.

  5. Anonymous

my concern was mentioned in my first comment. this sounds like hypothyroid. asuming that’s what it is, it can be managed with drugs. but a senior blood panel is a necessary annual thing.

Thank you for your help much appreciated

I’m wondering if that is a possible allergic reaction to Dextromethorphan? What did the vet say?

    Hello,
I’m glad that you are at a vet now to see if any reaction is happening. Robitussin can be used by dogs (it’s not cleared by FDA for use in dogs, but many vets to use it to treat)…

I’ve never heard of any reactions with it, but I’m sure there are some dogs that do.

Would be interested to hear back from you after the vet does the exam.

    Hello,
It sounds like your dog is vomiting bile. Sometimes if a dog hasn’t eaten in awhile the bile can irritate the stomach and then they vomit. How long does your dog go between meals? If your dog only eats once a day, try doing twice per day…or even three times per day if possible. Use the same daily amount of food, just divide it up into more than one feeding.

Of course, it could be other things that can cause this, but this would be my first thought.

Yes She Had A X-ray And Said It Was Brocken But I Have Had Dogs…

Yes she had a X-ray and said it was Brocken but I have had dogs all my life and could see that the dogs leg was not out of place and she was running on all fours so can you tell me how the dog could run and jump with no sign of pain

I have seen animals run around and act normal after their leg is splinted. Can’t say that I have ever seen a dog run around with a fractured leg and not limp or hold the leg up. Even dogs with toe fractures hold their legs up.

She Has Sores In Ears & Swollen Neck & Face. Could This Be Strangles? Ears…

She has sores in ears & swollen neck & face. Could this be strangles? Ears are oozing and pup is lethargic. I have limited income for vet and would like to walk back in with an idea. It reads like some descriptions of Strangles, just backwards from how I read it.

She felt where the injury was and decided that the treatment would be the same because it wasn’t snapped. wrapped, pain meds and revisit in a week. Now with added symptoms I am glad she didn’t add the expense.

  2. Laura Kyle

She might need further diagnostics. Maybe her initial pain was related to the joint pain? I would have bloodwork done and perhaps survey X-rays. Good luck! I hope she improves
