So I thought he was making himself throw up to eat again. Because he doesn’t really cry or seem in pain. But I switched his food to see if that would help. But lately he’s been throwing up way more, and it’s mostly just clear and a small amount of white foam, and sometimes some food mixed in. He still doesn’t seem in pain and doesn’t cry. Sometimes he gags to get it out, other times he will literally just be walking and a small amount will come out. He’s also been drinking quite a bit of water lately. And urinating quite a bit when he goes outside. But other than these symptoms, he seems completely fine.

Dogs don’t make themselves throw up in order to get it to eat it again. Throwing up for extended period of time, particularly after a meal is a concern.

If stomach content comes out “on its own” without any heaving, it’s called regurgitation. That can have its own set of causes, such as megaesophagus, which is pretty serious stuff. Is he losing any weight? Reasons for vomiting can range from issues in the digestive system itself to systemic problems such as kidneys or liver.

With your set of symptoms, please do take him to a vet and have this diagnosed so you can treat it accordingly.

She is now eating and drinking fine but her breathing is horrible. She is gasping alot and it has me worried. She is currently on Amoxicillin and I am using a humidifier to try to help her breathing.

the not drinking would worry me, so i’d take her to your vet – every new pet should be seen by your vet within 3 days of coming home, anyway.

Another vet said she did not need surgery. When I took Luna in to have surgery, I was told she did not need any extractions, just cleaning. Luna has been fine until a few days ago. She is now experiencing pain again while eating.

Yesterday I Noticed She Has An Inflamed Vulva, And Today There Is Brown Discharge From…

Yesterday I noticed she has an inflamed vulva, and today there is brown discharge from her urethra. She is normally fairly mellow with bursts of energy (she is a 9 month old pup after all), but today she has slept all day and barely left the couch. She feels warm, but I do not have a thermometer specifically for her so I can’t determine if she has a fever.

I’m not sure if this is related, but yesterday morning and the night before she threw up after meals. She was eating faster than usual because we were visiting a home with another dog, so she wanted to finish eating so they could play. I suspected that was the cause, but I don’t want to leave it out just in case.

There are no emergency veterinarians in or near the small town I live in so I’m very anxious if something is wrong!

has she gone into heat before?  i’m not a vet, but a suddenly fluffy vulva (and THANK YOU for using the correct term!) and brownish discharge would make me think it’s a heat cycle.

  2. Brenna Routhe

She is spayed, and as far as I know she never had a heat cycle before the operation. Unfortunately I don’t know for sure because I adopted her from a rescue who spayed her before adoption. Thanks for the quick answer!

hmm. that was my only thought. it’s possible she’s dealing with a UTI. i’d get her in first thing tomorrow morning unless one of the resident vets pops in with another idea.

  4. Brenna Routhe

Thanks! 🙂 I was planning on it, just wanted to get a quicker opinion since she won’t be able to be seen until tomorrow morning at the earliest.

The vulva is an organ designed to clean its various anatomical structures by creating discharge.  For this reason the discharge itself is not problematic it is the color and odor.  The color and odor indicates the level of infection or presence of unhealthy microbes, UTI, Etc.  I do not have a course of action to recommend, I believe a veterinarian’s diagnoses is required until you more fully understand what this type of discharge represents.  Your dog’s temperature is great measure to the level of immune system activity and infection, so knowing your dog’s temperature now combined with the vet’s diagnoses will give a valuable benchmark for the next event.  I would recommend becoming an expert in your dog’s temperature during the treatment process for future use.  This type of ailment tends to reappear but at numerous levels of severity, being able to determine via temperature combined with the color and odor should assist you in future treatment decisions.

that’s the problem i took him to three diffrent vets and his condition is still the same i force feed him every day but that does not come up with any goods 🙁

  3. Shiria

What did the vets do? What came out for the bloodwork (kidneys, liver, T4…?), did they do an x-ray or ultrasound? What’s with his ears? Did he stop eating first, or did the weakness/balance problems came first, any other symptoms?

  4. Ýàçînè Sàīdî

The dog only eats 2-3 morsels if any. Shouldn’t this food be kept in a glass or metal containers?
Can dry dog food turn rancid and put off a gas that makes it difficult to breath. I’ve been smelling this for months and its getting worse. Can this be unhealthy for me?

Here is a problem with expired food or with food exposed to air – it’s poisonous. The nutrients degrade and more importantly the fats go rancid. It’s definitely BAD for the dog.

I don’t know whether or not inhalation of the odor would be an issue to a person; theoretically you smell by exposure to “particles” so I’d say potentially yes.

I understand that your roommate’s finances might call for budgeting but this is a very bad way of saving money. I’m surprised the dog is still alive. There are affordable dog foods out there which don’t have to be past expiration date not to break bank. And leaving food in the bowl upt to a few weeks is just crazy.

Thank you, after I showed her your comment. She doesn’t believe it but she went and bought 73% hamburger meat, and cooked it in microwave with frozen green peas. I know dogs can eat peas if run through food processor. I had a lasa apso 28 years and a pekingnese 14 years and never seen anything like this. Im too the point of wanting to take the dog to a vet to make sure its okay. The animal seems happy, energetic but skin is dry, hair is course and shedding terribly.I’m just concerned as this is her first dog and she feeds it everything she eats the dog gets some too. I showed her the list of do’s and don’ts for what to not give your dog. The dog does go to the bathroom but doesn’t urinate maybe twice a day if that. I’m just so concerned for the dog. The owner thinks she knows best.

  3. PK Dennis

Jana is right on!  Plus I need to think that if the dog is not skin and bones, and is leaving food in a dish for weeks there is too much food down at any one time!

Dog food should be purchased in small quantities, stored in an air tight container and fed to the dog according to the instructions on the package.  AND being a responsible dog owner includes buying the best food one can afford — and anyone but the homeless can afford better than expired dry food from a discount store.

Put that food out for the rats and go get that poor dog some decent grain-free food, look for a pet store that does not sell puppies and pick a grain-free kibble that has real meat as the first 2 or (and even better 3) ingredients.  You should be able to get a very good kibble for $14.00 a bag.

Follow the instructions for the amount to feed per day on the package (based on the weight of the dog) and put only that amount down each day for the dog.  Put a little water on the kibble before you put it down.  If the dog doesn’t eat it within 20 mins than pick it up and throw it out.  Unless the dog is one of those that are so picky they only eat one or two bites unless hand fed, it will be eating its meals in mins and licking the bowl clean.

Once you have accomplished this it will be time to have a heart to heart conversation with your room mate.  Explain what the food costs, how much better it is for the dog, how much happier the dog is eating it — and most of all, how much better you feel not having the nasty discount food in your environment.  And see where it goes from there.

The reality is that you may need to find a new room mate if she cares so little for her dog to treat it this way.

    Fight the good fight!

  4. carolyn autuori

    Thank you, PK Dennis,

I will show her this comment as well. Yes, I will get a new roommate as Icannot sit and watch this dog get fed this way. Im so concerned if something happens to her dog while she’s gone, she will blame me. I’ve never let either of my two dogs go without the best food available. My dogs ate like princesses and prince’ s until I had to put them down. They were my children. This has open my eyes that everyone shouldn’t own animals! God bless.
