Hi, I Have 2 Dogs, A 13yr Old Sheprador And A 7yr Old Staffordshire Bull…

Hi, I have 2 dogs, a 13yr old Sheprador and a 7yr old Staffordshire bull terrier. They both have great temperaments generally speaking. Today I brought home my new puppy after waiting 6 weeks for him to be ready! My Sheprador is fine with him and just lets him get on with things, however my Staffy is a little hostile. Initially he sniffed his back end and then his face, walked away and left him to it. Now his hackles go up and he runs away in order to avoid him and growls if he doesn’t want to move but the puppy has come up to see him. I have followed Cesar Millan’s method of training with my Staffy but it is so hard to find general advice anywhere. My question is how do I deal with this? Do I make my Staffy stay in the same room as the puppy, or do I let him have his own space and get used to the puppy in his own time? All of my animals have always got on but the Staff was my latest addition until today (I had the Staffy from 8 weeks old too). Thanks!

Thanks for your reply. This is the line I was thinking of taking so it has confirmed everything for me. The only thing I can’t do and am desperate to do is to take them for a walk together as the puppy hasn’t had his injections as yet. Thank you so much for your advice I shall certainly keep this in mind whilst settling everybody in!

Elliott, The Senior Adjusted Very Quickly To Getting A New Home A Year Ago…

Elliott, the senior adjusted very quickly to getting a new home a year ago. Seems possessive of his cage, at least with the dog. Pinapple, the baby seems very people friendly and hand tamed. He is sharing a cage with another green cheek of the same age at the pet store

    Hi Ashley,
I just love green cheeks!! I used to have several and they are just wonderful. Nandays tend to be a  little bit larger as well as more “possessive” and more boisterous birds than the green cheeks. But you can certainly try them together. I would NOT recommend just sticking them together in a cage and hoping for the best. First, you’d want to keep them isolated for at least 2 weeks until or until you can take your new bird to a vet for a general exam/check up and to rule out any disease.

Next, once your vet clears him as healthy I would be sure to closely montior them when they are near each other. You will want to be sure they each have their OWN cage to be in. Putting them in the same area, but not directly near each other is a good first step., then moving the cages closer if you’d like. Until they are next to each other. I’d never put the cages so close that they can grab one another through the bars, so be sure there is still a good gap.

Once you’ve had them near one another and they seem interested but not screaming or trying to attack, then you could try introducing them together on neutral territory,,,like a playgym. Always ALWAYS stay near so you can step in and remove one if they start to hurt each other.

I always keep birds in their own space when I’m not around –unless you have an aviary type situation with lots of room for them..they really need their own areas unless they are a very bonded pair. So until that happens make sure you have two cages.

In general I’ve found birds either love each other or hate each other. Usually no in betweens. You def are taking a risk with bringing a new friend home, either it will work ,or it will fail. But there is no way of telling how they will react based on how the green cheek is behaving in the store with a bird it already knows.

    Good luck!!!!

Please No Negativity Here. Let Me Explain The Situation. I Live With Roommates And I…

Please no negativity here. Let me explain the situation. I live with roommates and I have 2 females and she has 2 males, I had my females before she got her males. Anyways, we had separated the males from the females at the end of May. I don’t know how I missed all the signs, denial? I don’t know but it wasn’t until July 5 when I noticed that her teats were getting bigger and realized she was pregnant and didn’t know how that could have happened as we had separated them and the reason why we separated them was because we were going to get them fixed through a program but they couldn’t do it until the middle of this month so we thought it’d be best to separate them. Anyways, at around 1130pm on July 13th I heard a lot of cries coming from outside as if to say an animal was in distressed, so I went outside to check on my two and they were both acting very excited and my pregnant girl disappeared into the back yard where it was dark, so I grabbed a flash light and followed her and that’s when I realized she was in labor, she was panting heavily and found herself a spot.

So I picked her up and took her into a bigger spot where I can keep an eye on her and I waited with her. At 1:30am July 14, she had her puppy but only 1 so I thought okay, we got lucky and only have to find a home for 1 puppy.

Now today she is still crying and panting and keeps licking her vulva, is that really normal? I’m just very concerned with her and right now she is crying too. I need advice please.

Sorry it’s been forever ago since I posted here. Had my hands full. Ok, I took Chloe to the vet and they told me she was fine even t he though she wasn’t acting herself.

She had only 1 puppy, I have an appointment to have my other dog and my roommate male dogs as well but of course they won’t fix the mama dog until her puppy is weaned at 8 weeks and everything. Chloe seems to be doing much better though

I will be keeping the little guy as his mom refuses to feed him anymore and I have been bottle feeding him since he was about a week and a half and he is now 3 weeks old as of yesterday. I just haven’t decided on a name for him yet.

I am adding this special little guy to our family, his name is Buddy and he is so advance for his little age, it is so cute and adorable. I just love him and he is an awesome addition and his mama has a spay date as well.

Over The Weekend I Had To Leave My 4.5 Month Old Puppy At A Local…

Over the weekend I had to leave my 4.5 month old puppy at a local kennel while I was away. Today I picked him up and brought him home, and he seemed very tired. I assumed he had played a lot and ignored it.

After going to a walk, I have realized that my pup keeps attempting to urinate, but only manages to get a few drops out. We got home and he drank 3 full cups, 24oz of water instantly. About a half hour later he was peeing great and back to 100%

Now, about 2-3 hours after giving him the water he is back to trying to pee with nothing coming out, due to his bladder being empty. What is wrong with him, I took him to the vet but he didn’t do anything or say anything for help, told me he was fine and all test results turned up normal.

If you have to ask if you need to take a pet to a vet, the answer is always yes. 🙂

that’s WAY too long for puppies to be by themselves.  please find someone to watch them.

  2. Anna K

If I had someone who would take care of them when we’re not here, I wouldn’t ask this question. Unfortunately, we’re new in this country and the vet advised us NOT to leave them at the clinic due to distemper outburst (they’ve been vaccinated today for the 1st time).

  3. Anonymous

Anna, i would look into a pet sitter in your area. seriously. PLEASE don’t leave these puppies alone for more than a few hours. please.

  4. Anna K

The only option we have is to arrange a pet check in the morning to change water. Pet sitters are not available at my region because of Ramadan (boarding centers are full) or religious issues (dogs are considered ‘haram’ ). I’ve already checked what’s available.

  5. Anna K

They will be staying in the garden where they usually stay for the whole day ( they poop there and pee). They are in the house usually for the late evening and night. Our lab will be 15/16 week and Golden 13/14. We cannot change the date, because we may not be able to legally enter the country if we stay any day longer – and this is pretty important part.
I can arrange somebody to change the water in the morning – but no touching the dogs or staying with them – religious issues for my neighbors and the person who will perform the pet check.

thank you so much! but she isn’t really moving around. she’s just lying there. the veternarian gave her IV fluids and said it should ware off in about 8 hours. will the fluids help with her recovery?

  2. mary toren

Yes, fluids will help. Provide room temperature water, not cold. Good luck.
