I would keep her on crate rest for 24 hours and see if she improves. This means she only goes out for toilet while on leash, and she stays in her crate otherwise. This will make it easier to determine if it’ll improve on its own or if she needs vet intervention.

Hi There- My Dog Basically Got Mauled By Another Dog 2 Weeks Ago. Her Sutures…

Hi there- my dog basically got mauled by another dog 2 weeks ago. Her sutures and staples are to be removed this week. Yesterday she developed a hard lump under her armpit to her chest. She’s limping a bit on that leg, started yesterday and she seems to feel much worse this morning.

I took her in last week to the vet (one week after the incident) because she has a lot of soft fluid build up on her side and belly. The vet said it was due to the trauma and she’s probably moving more and she’s not completely healed.

I’m very concerned about this since its gotten worse so quickly. Can anyone give me input?

I’m so sorry about your dog! I would call the vet first thing this morning. They’ve seen the patient, already are familiar with exactly what trauma has occurred and where, and will be able to give you advice better than anyone else. Good luck.

Thanks. I’m taking her at 11, but I just wanted to do some research before. I appreciate your concern Sarah.

An acute swelling after a trauma is often blood or fluid. It needs to be examined and perhaps even aspirated. Often othe modalities like an X-ray or ultrasound are also helpful.

Hi, sorry to hear your dog is in pain. Have you throughly checked her paw, plus in between her toes and pads to see if there’s a thorn etc ?
Also carefully go down her leg and see if she shows pain when you touch a particular spot. If it is a thorn etc take it out with tweezers and make sure its clean and bathed. If you cannot find anything then please do take her to your Vet…she’s showing pain for a reason. Good luck!

He’s an indoor cat, escaped few days ago and I believed he fell in the drain behind my house because he came back full of dirt. I think he might have hurt his leg jumping out of the drain. He’s not limping, didnt show any sign of hurt at first but when I tried to lift him up he got angry, when I checked his front leg, it didnt feel broken and he got really grumpy when I touch it. He’s still eating/drinking but less than usual. He’s also pretty moody and lethargic, less playful.

There Was Nothing That We Noticed Prior To Going To Bed That He Was Limping…

There was nothing that we noticed prior to going to bed that he was limping or anything but just woke up in the middle of the night not being able to put any pressure on his right hind leg. We waited until the next day but it did not get any better. We took him to the vet and they diagnosed it as strained knee legiments and put him on pain killers and a sedative to keep him off it. Apparently this somehow happened while sleeping?? A few days after being on the meds and completely off his feet, he now cannot put any pressure on his left back leg. He still struggles with the right as well.
Looking for some insight…..concerned something more serious……possible hip and joint dysplasia?

Hi Dan, sorry your dog is having such trouble. Knee injuries don’t happen during sleep but SOMETIMES an injury doesn’t show up until some period of rest. While sometimes an acute injury shows right away with vocalization and lameness, sometimes you don’t know until after rest or sleep. I’ve seen that happen as well as I had that happen myself.

HOWEVER, no having improved much after being on meds AND having problems with the other leg now too is definitely a reason to go back.

Hip dysplasia is a common issue in large breeds; did your dog have x-rays done at any point? That said, hip dysplasia is a chronic  issue. To me, chronic problem = progressive symptoms. Acute onset to me spells an acute cause. You don’t wake up one morning and have hip dysplasia you didn’t have the night before. We had this discussing about JD when he did something to himself running and his hips showed up looking badly. Everybody was convinced it was the hips but I felt that the hips were the same two days prior when he wasn’t having any visible problem. Surely enough, with some care and meds, couple months later his hips are still the same (or arguably worse) and he’s doing fine. It WAS some kind of acute injury on top of whatever the state of the hips was.

However, your dog is now having two bad legs. Yes, it could be bad knee ligaments. They couldn’t have been partially damaged and the left leg, having to bear the extra weight compensating for the right one, could have sustained further tearing to the ligament. Way too many dogs end up with bilateral problem where both knees go at about the same time and both need to be fixed.

Bad knee ligaments are serious, about as serious as hip dysplasia. The ligament, once damaged or torn does not heal itself to the previous state. The knees can heal in other ways through conservative management but with both legs affected that is not really an option. Regenerative medicine can do a lot of good but again, with both knees being a problem that’s probably not going to happen. Most common fix for both bad knees is a surgery on both knees to stabilize them

First things first, though. Go back to the vet. And I would go further with the diagnostics and include x-rays. I would do full evaluation, including neurological, just in case the problem isn’t with the legs but with the back. Some serious diagnosing needs to happen to determine what exactly is going on before you can talk about ways of dealing with it.

I think, while at it, I’d test for tick-borne diseases as well to be on the safe side.

Sometimes She’ll Open Her Mouth And It’ll Seem Like She’s Gasping For Air. I Asked…

Sometimes she’ll open her mouth and it’ll seem like she’s gasping for air. I asked my friend, who’s mother is a vet and she said she may just be having digestion issues but I don’t think that’s the case. I never really see her drink water. I have her caged with a male bearded dragon and he’s 100% completely healthy. Tonight she was in her cage and she didn’t look good at all and I had a bad feeling so I picked her up and usually when I pick her up, she’ll flail her arms and legs around for a second until I put her on my chest. She didn’t flail her feet around or arms and she seemed completely limp. She’s still breathing and I have her in bed with me now. Please help. I’m so worried. I’m 16 and I don’t have a lot of money so I can’t take her to the vet because I don’t have enough money. If anyone that answers this thinks it’s manditory for her to go to the vet, I will do my best to find a way to pay for her to be seen. Thank you.

This is serious.  I would try to find a way to get her to the vet.  Talk with your parents about this and tell them she NEEDS a vet.

Hello,
My cat came home limping. Only one of her back legs is affected. She is in pain, however, her leg looks normal and she is otherwise healthy. There is no swelling that I can see. Could it be a sprain or muscle injury?

Thank you for responding so quickly. She is resting in our garage right now

Update: Rugrat is climbing our garage attic stairs. She can put weight on her leg but you can tell she’s in pain. Other than that she is eating, drinking and using her litter box as usual.

My cats ALWAYS do a little something to there selfs , an when they were smaller , they would climb on things an jump off an limp for a day or two an then be fine . i took him to the vet after the first time an they told me it was a sprain an another time it happened to my other cat there was nothing wrong with him , he was just limping lol so sometimes unless you see a wound or they look badly in pain i honestly wouldn’t worry too much unless they persist to stay off the leg longer than 24/48 hours

I Went To The See The Vet Because My Dog Had A Bump On Top…

I went to the see the vet because my dog had a bump on top of his paw and wouldn’t walk on it. On the x-rays it showed one of his “toe” bone pushed in next to the other “toe” bone (broken) and it requires surgery they said. but right now he is walking fine with no limp. Instead of it needing surgery could it have been possible that it just needed a cast and time?

Hiya, My 6 Year Old German Shepherd Has Been Limping Oddly Since Last Wednesday But…

Hiya, my 6 year old German Shepherd has been limping oddly since last Wednesday but doesn’t seem to be upset or anything by it. She is really happy and still playing etc which is weird as normally if she hurts herself she acts like she is dying! But occasionally, especially when she has layed down for a while she can split her legs ever so slightly. She can still jump on the sofas etc too.

Have you tried putting her on crate rest for 24-48 hours to see if the limp will resolve on its own?  Allowing her to continue behaving normally is preventing it from healing and may be making it worse.

Crate rest means in the crate for the duration, and all potty breaks are on leash.  Out to toilet, then back inside…no walks, no play.
