Jana If it was me, I’d see a vet immediately. Particularly with sudden onset like this, I’d suspect some scary cause such as neurological problem, spinal problem, infection, toxin … I wouldn’t wait.

Anonymous we feed green beans as treats quite frequently. dogs don’t really need additional vegetables, though, and whole earth is a good food. what makes you want to supplement?

Jana I’d be more concerned about whether it is a puppy formula rather than whether it’s a grain-free formula. Particularly with a larger breed such as a Husky. I am not really sold on “all life stages” type of food.
Otherwise, looking at their grain-free recipe; grain-free doesn’t really mean low carb; this one has plenty of carbs; the protein content is only slightly higher than most and most go with bare minimum.
The food is formulated to AAFCO standards; so technically, as most vets assert (though I don’t agree) ingredients don’t matter, only nutrients matter. So from that perspective grain-free or not would be irrelevant.
To summarize, I’d recommend finding a food that is formulated for large breed puppies. I’m happy with grain-free formula when it meets that requirement.
As for other foods, certain veggies can be added in moderation just fine, if he likes them and, as Dr. Krista mentioned overall calorie intake is satisfied. Other safe “human foods” for treats are fine – much better than dog bisquits or other dog treats. Even though that do throw off the balance, so do any other treats out there (no treats I know of are formulated to AAFCO standards) and wholesome fresh foods are safer and healthier in terms of treats.

PK Dennis I use fruit for treats (no raisins!), and if I am chopping vegetables for myself I offer pieces as treats while we are in the kitchen. Other than that, I don’t routinely add fruits and vegetables to the raw diet I feed my boys. They are allowed to graze my yard and they eat dandelions (greens & flowers), some flowers (quince most often when it is in bloom), and most anything they can get in the vegetable garden including tomatoes, squash, raspberries, and blueberries.
I do add raw meat & raw bones to my foster’s diet — they get a grain-free kibble with raw meat and raw bones added to help keep teeth clean (raw bones) and add top quality protein. For example, they get their kibble and a duck wing, or an organically raised chicken wing (no hormones) or ribs/frames. Some times I add some canned Jack Mackerel to the kibble for Omegas, or a poached egg – about once per week.
As your pup gets older you can use things with larger bones (hormone free chicken legs, backs, etc.) but I would wait until he is over a year old before I start feeding these larger bones.

I am not concerned with the type of food I am feeding him, but in my research I have seen multiple articles stating the benefits of dogs have added nutrients to their diet that they cannot get from dog food alone. We alone cannot get everything we need from eating the same meal over and over again so naturally this made sense when talking in regards to the health of my puppy. I simply wanted to know from other pet parents which fruits and vegetables they have seen that have been good to add to their dogs diet.

My Dog Is Not Doing Well And I Need…
Hello people of Pawbly, specifically friendly vets.
My dog is not doing well and I need some advice.
I just moved from a house with a doggie door that allowed for bathroom time, any time. Now I am working on a schedule and trying to get into a routine with my pup (2 y/o red heeler/terrier mix). For the most part it’s been fine. I have him in the kennel when I’m at work from 6-2 Monday through Friday and only live 5 minutes from work. I take him out right before I leave And right after. He sleeps with me at night.
Last Friday, I took him out before going to bed, waited forever but no number 2. I woke up the next morning and there was crap- a LOT of crap- more than I thought caninely possible, all over the floor of my room. Normal color, texture. I blamed myself for not waiting long enough and let it go.
So last night, same routine, didn’t crap. I ran him around for 20 minutes trying to jostle whatever loose. Nada. So I figured he could wait until morning. I was awakened at 3 am by horrible, hot steaming dog land mines all over My bedroom floor again. Same color and texture as normal.
So I out him in his crate For the rest of the night Because I think since he’s a den animal He won’t go crappin it up in there. I take him out before work And come home to a crime scene.
In his crate, he is huddled in the corner, and this wave of old sour milk or something hits me and there are puddles of yellow liquid that I’m assuming is crap since I didn’t smell bike and there are other, little piles of similarly colored solid poo elsewhere. He hadn’t eaten since the land mines the night before.
I take him outside and he pisses and squirts out a little more diarrhea and keep straining for another 2 minutes but nothing else comes out. There is a little blood now on his backside from straining so hard.
I googled it, and it said right now it’s acute, if it persists, to take him in. He seems in good spirits except was ashamed when I came in and as I was cleaning up after him. I was going to feed him but Google told me not to for the day.
I should also note: at my previous residence I lived with an elderly relative who used her early stage dementia to feed him whatever the Hell she wanted. “Oh I forgot you told me not to”- Fritos. Peanut butter sandwiches, leftover foods. And now he is only eating the expensive all natural food I give him.
So I don’t know what to do. Is it an adjustment period to the new place (only been here 2 weeks) is it the change of diet? Is it my bathroom schedule? Is it stress from being alone all day?
Any advice would be fantastic. Thanks guys and gals.

Hi there,
The best thing is to never ‘force’ your dog into the crate.
The crate should be a safe haven for the dog, somewhere where they are never bothered and hopefully feel most comfortable to sleep in. Is it big enough or her to stand up in? If so try putting her water and food in there. Play with the ball and keep throwing it into the crate to get her used to the idea that every time she goes in it she isn’t going to be locked in and left alone. Especially with a rescue the crate should be build up slowly.
Once she starts feeling more comfortable going ion and out of the crate for meals, the ball and treats (and she clicks on that you won’t lock her in it every time she steps foot in) start putting her in, giving her a treat, closing the door and going upstairs/out of the room. Most dogs are worse when they can hear you around the house so it will take time. Try leaving her for 2 minutes, however if she is starts crying or whining do not go to her, just wait it out. Have you tried putting a blanket over it? Even my dog who has been crate trained since a puppy feels bit more uncomfortable if he doesn’t have a blanket covering 3/4 sides.
To me it sounds like this dog suffers from separation anxiety, this can be managed but you will have to remember that she may never really adjust to being left alone for long periods. A drastic measure may be to consider getting another dog if she enjoys their company? Some dogs with separation anxiety can quickly turn very destructive and this can be dangerous for them if they chew through a wire or choke on something. However it may not be this at all and she may just get over excited that she has escaped the evil crate!
What type of crate have you got? Most dogs can escape a material crate as if they paw at it long enough the zip will start to move, try investing in a sturdy metal crate with several bolds to keep it shut.
Another thing to consider is that your rescue dog may need some time to adjust to your home. I have taken on dogs that have taken 2 years and some that have taken 2 weeks.

Thanks a lot we have tried putting food and water in her crate and even putting her toy in there, we have a sturdy metal crate but she uses brutal force to brake it we have tried zip ties and she just brakes those too, but at night when we put her in there she is fine because she knows that we are here and that she is not alone.
