Does Anybody Know What This Could Be? It Happened The First Time When He Was Around 6 …

Does anybody know what this could be? It happened the first time when he was around 6 months old, he has been to the vet a few times and had multiple tests done but the vet can’t seem to figure out what it is. Usually it will first appear as a bald spot and then over the next few days turns into a moist sore, and then within a week or so it starts healing and the fur grows back. This is probably the 5th or 6th time it has happened but this time it was worse, the photo with the big bald spot is one that appeared a few weeks ago and is now in the healing stage but now the smaller one just appeared today. I will take him to the vet again but I’m getting frustrated not having an answer, has anyone seen something like this before?

Hi Grace – do you know *what* tests were done? Did they do a skin scrape? It’s odd that it’s such a specific patch…does it recur in the same place?

Honestly, after so many visits to your generalist with no answers, I’d be looking for a veterinary dermatologist – they can be found at vet schools, usually, but may be found at local Pet ERs. If you’re in Maryland, I know the vet school in Salisbury should have someone specializing in it. I know UPenn’s vet school also has someone. Search for veterinary dermatology near you.

Thanks for the response. We took him to the vet again and they did a skin scrape (has been done in the past along with basic blood work, i think a CBC and CMP) and the only thing that was determined was it was some sort of bacterial infection, yeast, fungi and parasites have been ruled out but they did not know specific type of infection and just sent us home with some antibiotics as usual. The soonest we are able to get him to see a dermatologist is beginning of July, and with how frequently it has been happening I’m sure it is going to happen again by then. It’s always on the same spot too, we do not have fleas and have not been giving him and medications/treatments that could cause it, we also have been experimenting with limited ingredient foods to try to rule out food allergies but so far no luck.

That’s so frustrating! I hope the derm is able to give you better answers.

In June My Labrador Developed A Lesion On Her Side. She Was Treated With Antibiotics And …

In June my Labrador developed a lesion on her side. She was treated with antibiotics and a medicated shampoo with no success. Her hair started thinning and she developed a lesion on the opposite side. Bloodwork was run to test for Cushings which was negative. As she started to take a Cushings type appearance her docs followed up with an ultrasound. In October she had a punch biopsy. She was treated with Apoquel with no improvement. She has lesions on her chest, both sides near her hips and one near her hind end. I have never seen her itching or chewing. The lesions are crusty and pretty dense. Hair loss is only on her trunk.
A little history: my dog is 10 1/2, has spay induced incontinence, history of frequent UTI’s, frequent urination, and megaesophagus. She is on Dasuquin, Cranmate and Welactin. Despite her plethora of health issues she has never had skin issues. Typically her coat is blue-black, thick and shiny.
She doesn’t seem to be uncomfortable but she seems to have a pretty high pain threshold.
Thank you for your time.

Did they test her thyroid? A FULL thyroid panel, not just T4?

My 2 Year Old Pit Bull Has A Sever Rash On His Thighs Up To…

My 2 year old pit bull has a sever rash on his thighs up to his chest and under arms. We rescued him a year ago and everything was fine but about 4 months after we got him the rash started appearing. By vet recommendation we moved him to gluten free food that helped for a little but the rash returned. Then the vet gave us allergy medicine. That worked until they were gone and then the rash was back again. Now the rash is worse than ever. It starts out looking like dry, irritated, inflamed skin around his thighs and under arms and then starts to peel and ooze. Up his chest he has red bumps that half look like pimples and half like hives. Our vet now wants to try allergy shots but I don’t want to do that unless I know it will work and nothing else will. I am very tight on money but what my baby to feel better.

I was just wondering if the vet did a skin scraping to check for mange mites?

My Dog Sira Had A Cruciate Ligament Tear Of The Right Knee And Had ACL…

My dog Sira had a cruciate ligament tear of the right knee and had ACL done with complete meniscectomy on 1/21/15. After 2 months the knee felt swollen and all of a sudden there was a blister that broke open and release a LOT of almost clear fluid and the “swelling” was gone. The little blister wound healed but after 6 weeks swelling/fluid on the outside of the knee joint and the little cap opened up and again fluid oozing out. The vet examined the fluid, even cultured it and there was some inflammation but no infection. For almost 2 weeks the knee looked better, skin color was pink but all of a sudden this changed. The skin looked darker with every hour, turning purplish and again fluid collected under the skin. Again to the vet who tried to drain the fluid out with a syringe but with not much success. The fluid had become more bloody. My dog was put on previcox and baytril. But again after it looked better for a while one morning the certain (blister) spot looked a bit different and 5 hours later it was blueish – pink marbled and 5 more hours later it broke open and again this viscous discharge. What is the cause? Could it be an allergic reaction to the nylon line or the stainless steel crimps that were used for the ACL? How likely is this? I got the recommendation from another vet whom I consulted while the surgeon was on vacation to have the nylon line and metal crimps removed and hopefully enough scar tissue has developed by now so that the knee is stabilized by it. I have spend now close to $3000 on exams, surgery and meds. To remove all that what has been put in to stabilize the knee joint seems like a waste but what good does it do if it doesn’t heal? I cannot let it go on like that and risk an infection of the knee, can I? Has someone seen such a reaction after an ACL surgery? Does this look like an allergic reaction? Is removing the lines and crimps the right next step?

It might be an allergic reaction, but I would find a better vet.
