My six month old pitbull has a large hematoma after a routine neuter. He was fine with no swelling for two days after the surgery, but day three his scrotum started swelling. We took him into the vet who explained it was normal for some dogs and sent us home with some sedatives to stop his moving around and told us to monitor. Later that day, the scrotum swelled to the size of a medium to large orange. We returned, and we’re given antibiotics just in case, as there was no evidence of fever to indicate infection. The next day, he the wound started draining, a pink substance likely blood mixed with some other bodily fluid. The suture area looks fairly normal, just a small amount of redness and swelling, and the fluid smells of iron, not infected. We were advised to place a warm compress on for a few minutes a couple of times a day, but our pup won’t let us near the area. He is a sweet dog, but the sedatives combined with the pain are causing him to snap at us when we go near the back legs. He refuses to even sit down for hours at a time. Do you have any advice for how to help him through this? My wife and I work 8-9 hours during the day, though we have family that stops by for a few hours at a time to watch him. I’m just worried that he is in so much pain he won’t let us help him heal.
My beagle is 4 days out from IVDD Cervical Decompression via ventral slot and is still in horrible pain with all the same symptoms. Neck spasms, rigid stance, head lowered and will NOT lay down. He stands for hours on his bed then finally he lays down. He is on a very very strict medication schedule using Gabapentin, Tylenol 4, Diazepam, famotidine and Prednisone. He is taken out 3-5 times daily using a ramp to get to grass for potty breaks. How long should this take for even a small amount of pain relief?

I know it is hard to watch andveey frustrating. Every dog is different but I can say that this is not uncommon. It took Hankrhe dog I wrote about in my blog 10 days before he showed much improvement or relief. I would ask about tramadol buprenorphine and/or a fentanyl patch. Or increasing one of the medications you have. You would have to ask your vet about these. Also I have to admit beagles are not the bravest souls.
Don’t give up. But do call your vet. Add more pain management.
Oh and ask about methocarbamol (robaxin). That was the most helpful medication in the early days f recovery.
Thank you. Yes, I did contact my primary care vet this morning and they added 50mg Tramadol 3x daily. I will be contacting the surgeon in the am.
I appreciate your response so much. I have researched and researched this online with no luck. Yes, he is a bit of a drama boy but his eyes show it all. So much pain. As of right now after 1/2 of a 50mg Tramadol his lying in his bed somewhat sleeping. Neck isn’t showing any spasms right now but the minute he gets up it starts again. This is what made me see the vet in the first place. Does this every go away? And why is it happening?
My cat is in pain… I don’t know what happen.. but he cries, he’s lying on the ground hardly breathing, moments later he pees while lying… I couldn’t take it to vet cause of the location we are in. Please i need to save my cat, please help me.
I’m sorry to hear about your cat. He desperately needs an examination to help understand what might be going on. A veterinarian will look, listen and feel him all over and from there try to give some guidance on what might be going on. Even with this it is sometimes necessary to perform a blood analysis and radiographs. The only advice I can give you is to see a vet immediately. I hope he is ok
It sounds like an emergency and you really need to find a vet asap.
Dog bite. On Christmas Day she got bitten by another dog . All vets are closed right now. What can I do until tomorrow to clean the wound or to ease her pain. She’s 11 yrs. old.
Without knowing the extent of the injury all I can advise is to try to keep her quiet and calm and monitor for any trouble breathing or discomfort. Signs of breathing difficultly, trouble walking, dissension of the abdomen, bleeding, changes in attitude that include panting, inability to get comfortable, or any sign of distress warrant an immediate trip to the closest emergency clinic. Please see the vet tomorrow and I expect they will do a thorough exam and provide pain medication (please don’t use an over the counter without the vets ok), and antibiotics.
9/23/16 2 yr old Maltese has IVDD and has a cervical issue. We didn’t take him to the neurologist, but chose to treat with medication. He was paralyzed is all but one front leg. Never lost deep pain. It’s been two weeks of crate confinement and he is much better. He can sit and has even stood a couple of times.
My question is, how long does he need to stay confined in a small space? Do i let him try to stand?
I usually cage rest dogs like this for at least 6-8 weeks and recheck them at least once or twice during the this time.
my cat is acting different lately she is sleeping more and not really wanting to do anything and when we touch her on her belly she meows like she is in pain does she have cancer or is she sick?

I cannot tell you what is wrong but she ABSOLUTELY NEEDS A VET! Please go as quickly as possible. If you think she is in pain and if she is lethargic and poorly responsive why hasn’t she seen the vet?
I really hope she gets to the vet soon (like tomorrow morning) and that she is ok.
I expect that she will need an examination, xray and bloodwork to help understand what is wrong and provide her an appropriate treatment plan to help her feel better.
I have a 9-year-old 5 pound chihuahua with a collapsed trachea. He has been on hydrocodone on and off for a few months now, and it does not seem to help at all, even at the maximum dosage. He was put on steroids which worked well for the first 2-3 weeks, but they stopped working all together before he was even done taking them. Is there any other medication out there that could possibly help? He is still eating, drinking, going to the bathroom etc without any issues, just a horrible constant cough that keeps him up half the night and I’m certain must be painful for him.

My very good friends dog had excellent response and recovery with diet change, weight loss and lomotil. Please ask your vet about these. We also provided nebulizer treatment and significantly restricted exercise and stress.
My 1 year old cat has been diagnosed with FLUTD last night. They gave her fluids and a pain med, along with prazopan (is that right?) I haven’t noticed her having went pee yet since they empties her bladder…. Is this something I should be concerned about?
I rescued an abandoned 10 day old kitten. Now 16 days old. just starting have diarrhea and now sore red bottom. Appetite is waning. Also meows constantly as if in pain. Please help!
Of note, I took the kitten to the vet at 11 days, and she tested negative for parasites in stool. I am using the correct formula.
Before I provide details, I plan on taking her in to the vet tomorrow as her regular vet is closed to. I’m hoping someone will be able to provide me with what I can do in the meantime. My three year old dog is in alot of pain in her hind legs and when I lightly touch her left hip down to her leg she yelps. She cant walk but still has a little feeling in both legs. I have tried almost everything to help relieve some pain but it doesn’t seem to be working.
Probably the best thing right now is to make her comfortable until tomorrow. Try to keep her from moving around too much. A crate or dog travel pen is commonly used to avoid moving around. I would place her inside.. right after she uses the bathroom one last time and given some food or water. Don’t keep touching her where it hurts and don’t fuss over her just keep calm and relaxed. Unfortunately there is no pain medication you can give her. Keep her calm and laying down. You can also try ice or heat to her painful area.

These cases do happen. They usually resolve on their own in about a week. If you cannot treat him at home see if you can drop him off at your vets to stay for the day while you are at work. Good luck. It will go down. It will just be an awful 5 days of waiting. And ps I have seen them cantaloupe size. Ouchie!!
