My ~1 Year Old Cat Is Having Two Problems:
1. While We Play, She Is Moving…

My ~1 year old cat is having two problems:
1. While we play, she is moving her head in a weird way when (I think) she needs to focus on the “prey” with her ears.
This can be seen below in this short clip:
https://youtu.be/69bADiXzqKU?t=9
2. She sometimes plainly shakes head, during play time or walking. This behavior is clearly seen on the clip below:
https://youtu.be/p3CKfJFZlV8?t=5

Does this look like an inner ear infection (since I can’t observe any ear mites/parasites/fleas on the outside of the ears)? Is it possible to treat at home or she needs to see a vet?

first: THANK YOU for linking to videos in  your post.  i really appreciate that, and it makes it a LOT easier to diagnose.

for 1 – i agree with you.  i think she’s focusing on the “prey” with her odd head movement.  i’ve seen this before in a healthy cat.

for 2 – maybe?  i’d wait and see on it, honestly. if this is only during walks and play it may be behavior-related rather than health.

He acts like a normal six week old puppy other than the red poop. He plays a lot while awake and sleeps quite a bit throughout the day and drinks plenty of water.

yes, the dyes in lower end dog food like kibbles and bits will affect stool color.

please don’t feed a medium breed dog puppy food for small breeds.  the nutrient amounts are incorrect for your puppy and can cause health problems.  try to feed something that has no corn and has meat for the first two or three ingredients.

i would also wonder why you have a puppy 2 weeks early.  puppies should not leave their mother and littermates prior to 8 weeks of age.  is there any way you can take your puppy back to the breeder for 2 more weeks?

  2. Alesha Pearce

The food was just a quick fix the store I had to go to only had adult food no puppy food i figured small breed would work for a couple days because he is young until I was able to get a different brand. I didn’t know if I should feed him the adult stuff yet because he’s so small. Is there a specific brand you would recommend?

i am a big time fan of Wellness CORE. you’ll feed a LOT less of it than you will kibbles and bits because it’s very nutrient dense.

i’m still worried about her age. have you ever had an underage puppy like this before? is there a reason you brought her home 2 weeks early? depending on where you live, this is a crime…please report the person who sold her to you.

My Dog Had A Slipped Disc A Few Years Ago And Injured It Again Last…

My dog had a slipped disc a few years ago and injured it again last year. Last night I was carrying her and set her down on the floor and she started yelping. I immediately though it was her back but i noticed she would help if she moved her left leg. She would lay down and kick her leg back and Yelp some more.

I gave her some pain medicine and later on I took her potty with her sling and I felt a pretty big pop in her left leg. I took her to the vet today’s a he took an X-ray. He said that the hip didn’t look dislocated and her knee looked fine, he said he noticed a calcification in one of her discs from her injuring it.

She would hold her leg up and not put any pressure on it. The vet tested her reflexes and said they were almost non existent and he only got a pain response when he pulls her leg back. He put her on some anti inflammatory and now she try’s to use the leg but it looks like the leg sort of tilts inward.

I think her pain is finally under control now. The vet said it could be that she dislocated her hip and the pop I felt was it going back in. He also said she could’ve torn a ligament but her leg felt ok, it just had a tiny bit of extra play. And he also said that it could be the calcification is pushing on a nerve and that’s why she can’t really feel her leg.

I have her on pain meds and anti inflammatories and crate rest.

I don’t know what to think or what is going on, I got no straight answers. Does anyone have experience with hip/leg/back issues? What does it sound like happened to you?

Unfortunately it is very hard to diagnose what could be wrong with him over the Internet with those signs.   How long has this been going on?  Could he have eaten anything he shouldn’t have?   Will he drink tuna juice or anything?   I am not sure how close you are to one of the veterinary schools but they sometimes have student clinics that are cheaper or may be able to offer you a payment plan etc

  2. brie griffin

he so far hasnt eaten except for a few days, about 4 or 5 except one bite of canned food. i dont really know if he ate anything thats bad for him. he will drink water, thankfully. he seems to be losing a lot of weight. my mom said it could be a blockage would he get fat if it were a blockage?

  3. Ashley Carlson

You could also try calling local shelters or rescues to see if any of them may be able to help you.  Some shelters have crisis intervention programs or low-cost clinics.  Some may take him and make him better if you agree to surrender him.  I know that might be hard, but it could save his life. Check out http://www.nokillnetwork.org/ for possible options in your area.

  4. Kristen Vance

He definitely needs veterinary care. There are options such as carecredit which you can apply for online to use at local animal hospitals for as Ashley said maybe a rescue or shelter can help you.

You need to take him to the vet.  Try calling a local rescue, the humane society or even friends to see if they can help with money.

  2. brie griffin

sometimes my parents, im 13, wont do that, they dont seem to care or at least my dad doesnt, also my dad works to much to go o the vet with my mom

  3. Melinda Salmaone

I would see if you can borrow from someone ,also like was already said call your local shelters they might have knowledge or your local vets. Take some time make some calls . Vets may also discount their rate or offer a credit card through them or payment plan. you really need to act fast an animal not eating is serious and the ending won’t be good. So I cant stress enough act as quickly as possible. good luck to you and you kitten.

  4. Ashley Carlson

Some places may have volunteers to come out and help transport the kitten. Or if you have a local animal control officer you can tell them you have a sick kitten who needs help. Unfortunately sometimes they may euthanize the kitten, so you need to ask what will happen to him if they pick him up. Some shelters/rescues will do whatever is in their power to save the lives on the animals who come to them while others don’t have the resources and are forced to euthanize sick animals.

My Cat Has Dried Blood At The Edges Of His Nose. Why? He Hand His…

My cat has dried blood at the edges of his nose. Why? He hand his sister were given to us as kittens and she does not have this. They have their first felvshot as well as one other shot, no boosters and no other shots as we became unable to afford the bills of the only vet in the area. Otherwise they are both eating and drinking well, playing and active. They are 1 and 1/2 years old. He has no other health issues we know of just this cake black stuff at the edges of his nose that looks like dried blood. What should I do? And we have no money for an expensive vet bill. We have asked about a payment plan but they will not do that for us, and they are the only vet clinic around. We do not have a car.

is it possible this is just dust?  my cat will end up with black gunk around his nose when we’ve kicked up dust in the house.

does he have any other symptoms that might indicate an issue?

I Recently (three Days Ago Specifically) Took In A 1 Year Old Pitbull Puppy For…

I recently (three days ago specifically) took in a 1 year old Pitbull puppy for a family friend who can no longer keep her. I’m starting to worry about her, because she cries a lot and I’m not sure why. I had just taken her to use the bathroom where she did both, and when we got inside she started to whine – so I know it wasn’t because she had to use it. She lives upstairs with my mother and sister because my cats (three of them) live downstairs with me, and fear her. So whenever I get the chance to I come upstairs and visit and play her with her. She seems sad. She throws herself on the floor and makes a big deep SIGH. What could I do to help?

First I would take her to a vet for a check up to be sure it’s not medical.  However, it is possible she is depressed and may take time to adjust to a new family!

  2. Eliss Bonilla

Thanks! I hope she adjusts soon, I feel bad for her. Nothing I do seems to help – she walks around with her tail in between her legs.
