We Have An ~ 4mos Old Puppy Who Testicles Became Inflamed And/or Infected Recently. …

We have an ~ 4mos old puppy who testicles became inflamed and/or infected recently. He has had some diarrhea as well (was diagnosed with roundworm and treated), but otherwise has been acting fine. Blood work showed his was slightly anemic and his WBC was slightly high. Thyroid test was normal. UA was normal. Urine culture showed two different types of bacteria, but they decided it was contamination and didn’t treat one of them since it was only susceptible to an antibiotic that isn’t good for puppies. He was already on Doxy which would treat the second bacteria. Brucella screen was negative. He was neutered the other day and the testes were filled with blood. They were sent to the pathologist and a culture was also submitted (results pending). They also ran a distemper test as well as a different type of Brucella test (results also pending). Torsion was ruled out. Has anyone seen anything like this? Are there other tests we should ask about running to figure out what is causing this?

    Hello,
I have not seen anything like this. I suppose neoplasia, trauma and toxin are also on the list. The pathologist can hopefully provide the answer. Let us know please. Best of luck to your puppy.

  2. Denise Reitan Post author

They did X-rays and ultrasound and it didn’t show any masses. Trauma is still being considered, but in a week’s time things got worse, not better which seems a little unusual for trauma. No one has mentioned toxins yet – I’ll ask about that. Thanks! I will let you know what the pathology report says (probably be a few more days still).

How long should you wait to play with a boxer puppy (almost 8mos old) after they eat? I’ve read about bloat and am trying to nail down our morning routine.

When our Dobe was a pup, we kept her quiet for an hour before and an hour after all meals. I would stick to that…and maybe, instead of playing, use puppy’s meal as a training opportunity, since mental work trumps physical work for wearing out a dog of any age. Use the meal as training treats instead of actual treats. 🙂

Take him to the vet – you should take him in by today, anyway. Take a fresh stool sample with you and they’ll be able to give you the right meds for the specific worms your puppy has.

  2. Sarah

Since you’ve just gotten your puppy, I’m trusting that you’ll be scheduling, if you haven’t already, his first few visits to the vet for shots and such. Your vet will be able to provide a wealth of guidance and help with all sorts of things, including the worms situation. They may also to help you sign up for puppy socialization classes and basic training, which are always fantastic to do. Congrats on your new furry family member!!

My puppy got a bloat as he ate today but is sleeping and shows no sign of pain ! What to do ? Is it major or will go on its own ?

I would never treat bloat as a normal issue – if this is true bloat, the dog would be pacing and obviously uncomfortable.

I would plan to get your puppy to the vet today, to be sure nothing’s wrong.

  2. Sandra Sellers

I’d have to know exactly why you think they were bloated as that would come with a lot of signs and distress. Sometimes when puppies lay down on their sides, especially on a full stomach, their belly can look bigger but that doesn’t mean they are bloated. If you are truly concerned a trip to the vet is always the best response.

Can u please tell me how many times should I feed my 14 days Labrador puppy?

Your infant puppy should be feeding off its mother right now. Is there a reason this isn’t a possibility?

  2. Sarah

the best feeding for an infant puppy (or any animal for that matter) is from its mother. If that isn’t a possibility, then I would contact my vet- you’ll find that between routine vaccinations and check ups that you will be at the vets office quite a bit over the next year with your new friend? Your veterinarian will be able to guide you through everything you will need to know and more. Very best of luck!

My Golden Retriever Puppy Of 87 Days Does Not Eat His Food But If It…

Well, it is a broad question. Here is the thing. It is possible that there is an issue with the food itself, such as a) it might have rancid fats, b) it might contain something that doesn’t agree with your pup’s system … more importantly, your pup might not be feeling well. Here is how that works – some foods are more attractive/palatable than others and entice being eaten even if the stomach feels upset. For example, we had a similar problem with Jasmine (also since she was a pup) and eventually it turned out she had IBD.

I’d starting by having a close look at the food, followed by a vet evaluation. This might not be an easy thing to figure out but it is important that you do.

    Hello,
A puppy this young not eating is ALWAYS a sign of something wrong. Go immediately to the vet. I would be very very worried that he is sick and that it isn’t the food. I hope he is ok

My Dog Recently Had Puppies, They Were All Okay But I Checked Them Yesterday And…

My dog recently had puppies, they were all okay but I checked them yesterday and one of them has it’s neck tilted looking to left stuck in place, I believe it was the mother that hurt it because it got mad at it. The puppy with the hurt neck is still alive, I believe it’s eating, and it can walk (has some trouble though because of its head) I just I don’t know what to do, I want to take it to a veterinarian but it’s going to come out pricey for it to be checked out and I don’t have much money. The puppy is three weeks and was hurt 1-3 days ago

Your puppy needs a vet. There is no way around it. Please go as quickly as possible and please have your dog spayed.

Serious question, Elizabeth…why did you let the bitch carry to full term if you can’t afford vet care for the puppies?

What would you have done if she needed a cesarean? SO MANY emergencies come up with breeding…this is why it’s best left to those with experience and those with mentors.

My Puppy Is 13 Weeks, For The Past 2 Weeks He Has Been Very Good…

My puppy is 13 weeks, for the past 2 weeks he has been very good! Training well and just being a very good puppy, but the last 3 days he’s been really bad, he’s starting to pee inside again, chew up carpet, growling barking and biting, and just not listening to me and my parter! Is there any reason or anything as to why he’s all of a sudden acting like this?

    Hello,
Certainly it is possible and plausible that there is a medical reason behind this. The only way to know is to see your vet. After that we discuss adequate exercise, diet, training and making sure that your puppy has everything they need to be happy, healthy, and a welcome member of your family. I would like to add that puppies (or any pet at all) are never ever “bad”. They are trying to tell you in the only way that they know how to, that they are frustrated and need something. Usually it is more time, attention, training and exercise. Please be very very patient and understanding and please try to find someone who can articulate what your pup is trying to tell you. This is a crucial age for development, training and a lifelong successful happy relationship together. Get help from a positive reinforcement trainer.
    Very best of luck
Please let me know how things go.
    Krista

  2. Sarah

Right now it is really important to create good bond with your pup. This is best done through training, play and walks. Granted, the age and stamina of your puppy dictates the amount of time spent, but it is the quality of that time that is key. Being in tune with your pup is key. A puppy class would be very beneficial for both owner and dog. It is great for socialization, which is very important. It also helps owner with training and is great mentally for the dog. Please be patient during training… if you find you’re getting too frustrated, chances are that your puppy is too. Walk away and try again later. It should be fun for everyone.
    Good luck?
