He acts like a normal six week old puppy other than the red poop. He plays a lot while awake and sleeps quite a bit throughout the day and drinks plenty of water.

yes, the dyes in lower end dog food like kibbles and bits will affect stool color.

please don’t feed a medium breed dog puppy food for small breeds.  the nutrient amounts are incorrect for your puppy and can cause health problems.  try to feed something that has no corn and has meat for the first two or three ingredients.

i would also wonder why you have a puppy 2 weeks early.  puppies should not leave their mother and littermates prior to 8 weeks of age.  is there any way you can take your puppy back to the breeder for 2 more weeks?

The food was just a quick fix the store I had to go to only had adult food no puppy food i figured small breed would work for a couple days because he is young until I was able to get a different brand. I didn’t know if I should feed him the adult stuff yet because he’s so small. Is there a specific brand you would recommend?

i am a big time fan of Wellness CORE. you’ll feed a LOT less of it than you will kibbles and bits because it’s very nutrient dense.

i’m still worried about her age. have you ever had an underage puppy like this before? is there a reason you brought her home 2 weeks early? depending on where you live, this is a crime…please report the person who sold her to you.

did you tell them you have an underage puppy?  i would be pushing the issue – she could have head trauma or internal injuries from the fall.

  2. debra yuhasz

I would agree with the wait and see approach if you did not have an underage pup. Trauma and internal injuries are more common in very young pups. Also, at 7 wks. she should not be sleeping most of the time. She should play and be trying to bite your fingers, etc. Then sleep for a bit and be up exploring her world again. Please take her to the vet.

First, she sleeps all the time means that she sleep between 18 to 20 hours… Which is normal for a puppy. Second she went to vet yesterday and she’s super healthy.
Third as soon as it happend I called her vet and that’s what they told me.
Fourth fortunately she’s her usual self playing and wiggling her tail and being super active in those moments when she’s awake. Thank you for all your answers. Just wanted to let you know she’s fine and I’m in communication with her vet.

My beagle puppy, 8 weeks of age, is rather underweight and isn’t gaining weight as she should. She has already been to vet and been cleared but now refuses to eat. Have tried puppy milk formula, wet and dry puppy/dog food, etc. and nothing. The only thing she would eat after countless efforts was small pieces of prepared chicken. Any advice as to what to feed her that she may like and that will help her to gain weight?

I would try chicken flavored puppy food.  Otherwise, I would contact your local vet to be sure there is no underlying medical conditions.

I know when our dogs were puppies, sometimes they just were to distracted with wanting to play they didn’t want to be “bothered” to use the bathroom.  We would stay outside with them for a little while and continue to give them a “potty” command, we used “Go use the bathroom” and we would just repeat it over and over and then when they went we would make a big deal about it and immediately give them a treat to reinforce the good behavior.

If she is home alone a lot, it could just be needing more attention. Remember, puppies have A LOT of energy. 🙂

    Good luck!
