My Younger 3 Year Old Cat Chunk Has Been Having Eye Discharge For A Few…
My younger 3 year old cat Chunk has been having eye discharge for a few months. He uses the bathroom just fine, eats just fine, seems to be playful and very aware. The discharge is predominantly in one eye although it happens in the other too. It is a brown / rusty red color that seeps from the inner tear ducts. His eye looks okay when you look up close but Im no DVM. (He has been tested for FIV as well as Herpes in prior checkups years ago and tested negative). He doesn’t sneeze, although he does breathe some what heavy but that could also be attributed to his Chunky frame (working on it). I’ve read several possibilities including herpes, conjunctivitis, and respiratory infection. I am hoping this is something that can be resolved through an ointment like terramycin? Any recommendations / suggestions / advice? Thank you!
*Also may be beneficial to note my other rescue Captain Hook has one eye. The non working eye is flipped backward and does not function. As a result that one eye has always had blackish discharge (not the same color as chunks nor does it come out in the same way as chunks). Our vet said this is normal for his eye condition, but just wanted to mention because perhaps could be related? Or no?
Disclaimer *My cats are indoor cats on a strict wet food diet. Chunk is 3 and Captain Hook is 7. I take them to the vet when needed. Their last general checkups were two years ago. I realize they need to go every year, but my cat Captain Hook had many many medical problems (bowel disorders) so thousands of dollars in care credit we try not to take them unless needed, especially since they are indoor.

PK Dennis Take him to a vet! You don’t want to mess with it and chance he loses his sight in that eye. I also would try a wet wash cloth soaking it (use salt water — add salt to hot water until the water tastes like the ocean, don’t use water hot enough to scald you or the dog!) to help clean and flush the eye until you can get him to that vet.

History: He started showing sings of what appeared to be the mange at 3 y-o. Before this he was completely healthy and hadn’t had any sorts of trouble or illnesses. He was taken to 4-5 different vets and he had some studies done where they determined he had staphylococcus aureus on his skin. Most of them agreed that it was mange and suggested the following treatments (at different times, to no avail):
* Inyected clindamycin
* Ciprofloxacin tablets
* Cephalosporin (don’t know if tablets or capsules)
* Omega 3 and 6
* B complex and casein shots
* Shampoo with amitraz
* Florfenicol .6% spray
* Aluspray
* Antisebhorreic shampoo
And he is currently on an hypoallergenic salmon diet with special food.
Clinical signs:
* Weight loss
* Very swollen paws and skin in general
* Hair loss
* Loss of appetite
* Ulcers
* Lethargic
* Some fever here and there
* Redness in his eyes

Alejandra Torres He already had bloodwork and nothing showed up, in the skin scrape they just detected bacteria and in the skin biopsy they caught the staphyloccocus aureus. No fungi in any of those.
He was also seen at a vet teaching hospital by both students and doctors and most of them agreed on mange and one has been studying his case closely to no avail.

Alejandra Torres They are not in the US and not anywhere close to a border city at all. We are desperate which is why I’ve come here to ask online since we’ve taken it to plenty different vets on the city and outside the city and spent amounts on the thousands to get him better, which is not a problem because we love him but we are truly worried and aside from the staphyloccocus aureus on his studies, nothing else has shown.
They’ve urged their vet and themselves which is why they’ve gone to so many different providers and have tried all the treatments as prescribed to no avail.

Jana This actually kind of looks like ringworm to me, yes. Not seeing the red but seeing the patch. When JD had ringworm it looked like this (not red; normal skin color). Flat, not raised. Have it checked and conclusively identified.

Hi, my cat Dewey was treated at Jarrettsville Vet at the end of February b/c his eyes were swollen, red, itchy, tearing up. He was also sneezing. He was given an antibiotic, antihistamine, and eye ointment. His sneezing cleared up, but his eyes were still itchy, swollen and red so I took him back on 2/28/13. He was given a different eye ointment w/a steroid for 3 days.
He finished the eye ointment on 3/3 and the antibiotic and antihistamine on 3/10.
Yesterday, 3/20, his eyes were swollen and itchy again. But he has not been sneezing.
Could I give him another 3 days of the eye ointment? It’s called Neomycin and Polymyxin B Sulfates, Bacitracin Zinc and Hydrocortisone Ophthalmic ointment USP.

Krista Magnifico Hello Beth,
You can resume the eye antibiotic but I am concerned that once you stop it you will be right back to where you are now. It sounds like there is an underlying allergy? or something going on, and that the steroid is just quieting it down or masking it while you are suing it, but the underlying problem remains.
IF the eye returns to being swollen and itchy make a re-check appointment (preferably) with one of the doctors that you have seen already and keep investigating the underlying cause.
Sounds ike it is time for an answer to the problem because the medicine we prescribed hasn’t cured it yet.

What was the diagnosis?
So, steroids. Did the vet tell you this was the result of an allergy?
If so, the first thing you must do is get all grains out of her diet, including treats. No more sharing the odd cookie or corn chip with her. Go to a good pet store (not the grocery store or a big box store) and ask to be shown to the grain-free dog foods. Then start reading labels. You want a dog food that lists real meat as the first 2, or even better, 3 ingredients. Real meat is easy to recognize, it will say Elk, Bison, Turkey, Lamb, Pork, Salmon meal, Whitefish meal, etc. Meal is the entire animal ground up and dried – a good thing. Avoid chicken and beef – many dogs are reactive to those two proteins. Do NOT buy any food that lists ‘by products’ as an ingredient, this is a sign that you will be paying premium price for a sub-standard food.
Read all treat packages – they sneak a lot of grains into treats.
To help with the itching right now – rinse your dog daily with a mix of vinegar and water (1/3 vinegar, 2/3 water – organic apple cider vinegar is best if you can afford it. Use white vinegar if your dog is a very light color since apple cider can stain the coat.). Flush the mix through her coat, working it down to her skin, then let her shake and dry – don’t rinse it out. The vinegar helps calm the itch. You can do this several times per day on the naked skin since it will dry fast – you don’t want her to go to bed damp though.
You can keep a bowl of this mix at the door (use fresh mix every day) and dip her feet when she comes in from outdoors – this helps keep down the amount of pollen and mold spores she tracks into the house.
Cover your furniture with sheets or towels where ever you allow her to nap – then toss those covers in the wash every week. Same with her dog bed or crate liner. If she sleeps in bed with you – cover the foot of the bed with a sheet or beach towel – and wash it weekly. This keeps down the amount of pollen and mold spores on those surfaces too. Vacuum each day with a HEPA filter in your vacuum.
If the vet suggested Benedryl use Zyrtec instead – it seems to work better for dogs. The generic is fine, and use the same dose as the Benedryl – one pill in the morning and one at night.
If she has any hot spots (raw open wounds), dab on witch hazel with aloe vera (find in any pharmacy over the counter) and let it dry.
Consider feeding your dog a raw diet – google “BARF diet for dogs”, “raw diet for dogs”, “biologically appropriate diets for dogs” to learn more. It is a little intimidating at first, but after the first 6 months you will see such changes in your dog that you will never go back to dry bits out of a bag. And your dog will smell wonderful!
Keep in mind that a naked dog will feel warmer to us – we are used to having a layer of insulation (fur) between our skin and theirs. Normally a dog’s temperature is 102.5 degrees F and we are only 98.6.
If your dog has a skin infection you will need to continue to work with a vet – don’t let your girl get worse!
