Good morning?I’ll be honest, when it comes to eyes I don’t delay. I would watch her and if there is no improvement, I would get to the vet as soon as possible. Hope she is ok!
Dog Won’t Open Eye, Red, Watery
My dog, Max, was recently diagnosed with diabetes. We are still trying to find the right dose of insulin and were making progress until yesterday. His sugar was back up to 471 yesterday when 2 weeks ago it was 275. We know cataracts are already forming but this morning before 4am he woke me up. I thought he had to go outside but when I got him, realized he wasn’t opening his left eye. When he does open it, it seems rolled back and is red. His third eyelid is also visible. The right one is better but also seems like it might be bothering him. I contacted the vet for walk in hours today but wanted to see if anyone else has had this issue and what it might be.

Dean and I have been feeding Riley and Coco the Verus brand of dog food. Recently, we were told to switch to a different dogfood because of the FDA warning (even though Verus was not one of the brands listed by the FDA). Then I came across this article that basically says the warnings are a scam and would like your thoughts. Thanks!!!-

I don’t know who told you to switch or why, but if it was one of our vets I would say to start there. Second I do not find this site credible (just because you invented a dog food doesn’t make you an expert) and I take great offense at the two underlying arguments about why he believes the claim should be discredited “vets financial gain with the food companies is utter malarkey. The second unqualified and ambiguous reason is equally bogus. So I wouldn’t give this any credit and ask the vet who recommended you switch to clarify their position. If I can help I’m happy to. And no I’m not paid by the vet food companies to offer you or anyone any help. Hope you are all well and staying safe at home!

Symptoms are swollen bottom of eye, weepy eyes, squinting and keeping them closed. Since the second dose we noticed about a week into treatment that she opens her eyes about half way every so often. Still squinting and weeping a little bit. Swelling has gone down a lot, but still there. She is also on a daily dose of lysine and has been using it for about a week. After her medication time is over will her eyes continue to improve? Could the swelling just be her eyes irritated from the constant drops?

Anna Marie Brady The vet thought it was an occurance of feline herpes from the stress of the adoption. Our cat had some issues before adoption such as abandonment and broken ribs. But if by Monday we don’t notice any difference we are gonna see the vet again oand see about goimg to a feline ophthemologist if they don’t have any other ideas as to why her eyes won’t clear up.

Cookie has a bit of a squinty eye today and hubby’s not here We already have Maxitrol drops which she got for “general care” because she kept having white discharge from both eyes in the morning. How much do I worry about the squinty eye?

Me again. I think that as long as he is acting completely normal otherwise AND not rubbing his face or eye (which can cause trauma or damage to the cornea (think about all the doctors advice to not run your eyes)), then you are probably fine to wait until we open at 1. If he is rubbing his face please place an ecollar on him. You can always make a quick make shift one with either a large price of plastic or thick poster board or even a bucket (do a google search for homemade ecolllars people get creative. And you just need one for a few hours we have them at the clinic), and then come in. For dogs with a history of allergies I would recommend a saline flood (like the kind you do if you get a toxin in your eye). Nose to the sky and flood the eye with strike saline or clean two water (cool). To wash out any irritants. Or give diphenhydramine orally. I want to hold off on your pup due to the diabetes. I also am a little concerned about Horners. You can look that up online too. Dr Ahrens has been notified that she will see you at 1230. You can email me anytime if you need anything. Stay safe!
