Rectal prolapse…
I’ve taken in a little kitten that kept on visiting us about two weeks ago.. He’s about 15 weeks old. Took him to vet for first visit on July 5. He’s always has a slightly protruding rectum. Vet said probably from straining because of parasites. Gave him Profender – purge dewormer- and Revolution Plus. Could still see tapeworm segments even two/three days ago. Rectum looks good in the morning and then once he has a bowel movement his rectum prolapses – looks like a red Cheerio (for size visualization). He has a vet appointment next Friday. Should he go sooner to the vet? What can I do in the meantime? Saline rinse? Sugar water soak? Vaseline? Or nothing? Thanks!!!
I am helping someone who rescued a young female stray cat a few weeks ago. No microchip. The plan is to get her vetted and adopted. She tested positive for ear mites , & tapeworms. She has had 2 applications of Revolution , 2 weeks apart, per vet instructions. She had an ear hematoma that the vet drained and sutured. The vet gave her virbantel dewormer tablet , and she is now due for her second dose, the info with this product states it is for dogs and puppies only. She didn’t get that 2nd dose, will consult with vet about it – recheck visit tomorrow. My question is about the virbantel tablet, is it safe for use on cats? What are the risks ? She has had other symptoms that we thought were unrelated , now I am wondering if the 1st dose she received at the vet had some side effects. Also she was shaved to check for a spay scar, I attached photo. Looks like there were two incisions. Any thoughts and or advice would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

Hi Dr. Magnifico. You are our vet to our indoor cats. Last week, we brought in a feral cat that was roaming our neighborhood. Turns out, he is pretty friendly, allows petting and belly rubs. On Monday June 19th, I took him to Animal Rescue, Inc., to be neutered, a rabies shot, and flea control. They also checked for a microchip (none), and I paid to have blood work done to have him tested for feline leukemia. Unfortunately, he tested positive for FIV. I would like to find him a home. I have two questions. Do you know anyone willing to give a home to a big orange friendly male tabby cat, or is there anything you can do to help? Maybe doing a courtesy post on your facebook page? I asked Animal Rescue and was told to put him back outside since he is now neutered. I was shocked they said that, as he could infect other ferals. We are currently keeping him in our basement and I just noticed a tapeworm coming out of his anus. My second question is, can you prescribe a tapeworm medication, without me having to bring him in, since he is FIV feral, and just went thru so much at Animal Rescue? My husband can pick it up after work. If not, can you recommend an over the counter medication to treat tapeworms? I am hoping whatever it is, that it will be something easy to give, maybe something I can put in his food that is tasteless. Thank you. Terri

When our animal shelter takes in feral cats that turn out to be FIV positive we still let them back to their usual place, if they are truly feral and otherwise healthy. Nothing would be worse for them than to be contained for the rest of their live, always stressed out and afraid.
However if they turn out to be friendly, like yours and like to be touched etc. we try to find a new home – however still with the option to go outside, if they turn out to be not lucky inside.
Before doing so of course they will be treated against fleas, worms, get their cat flu shots, get neutered etc.
Of course they risk to contract FIV to other cats, but for neutered cats it’s lower, as they don’t get into fights that much and don’t mate.
It’s worse for leukemia. Of the last colony we trapped, most were tested positive for leukemia and they looked like it. They had a (very) bad health status and were put down, as they were completely feral.
I can’t recommend a medication for worms however, as the products will most likely be different from where you live and I’m no vet anyway.
4 months ago my wife and I purchased a chihuahua from what was supposed to be a reputable breeder. When we gor her she reeked of cigarettes bur we loved her already. We took her immediately to a vet and she is healthy and up to date on all her vaccinations but the issue we are having is wit a tapeworm. She had it since we got her. Our vet had treated her multiple times with both medicine and injections and she is on Sentinel for protection. Even had to put For-Bid in her food for the past month per our vet, but worm is still here. Getting frustrated and concerned for our baby pup. Anything we can do to help get rid of this?
I’m going to leave the medical part of your question to our vets, but I do have an observation regarding what makes a reputable, ethical breeder.
Unless the person from whom you purchased your puppy titles (as in, they earn titles through showing, obedience trials, etc…not just AKC registration) and fully health tests per the Chihuahua Club of America, they aren’t what I would consider ethical or reputable. Read through the links on the right sidebar. And maybe look into an insurance policy to cover potential health issues. Petplan and Truepanion seem to be two of the best…avoid VPI like the plague, they’ll just take your money.
We have had the pups repeatedly checked for fleas by vet and there are none. Both are indide dogs do no infestation ftom outside, dont even go outside. Been on Sentinel for protection since she was big enough to start and our 18 month old has always been on monthly Trifexis for prevention. Luckily even with continued presence of worm still is gaining weight and only loose stool was after surgery to spay and antibiotics were given. Just frustrating that we are doing all we can and still cannot get rid of. Wondering if I need to take to different vet.
We took two separate stool samples in to the vet, then while my wife had the pup there a small worm was left on her shirt by the pup. Vet said it was a tapeworm so I’m assuming that’s what it is.
But after multiple shots, multiple doses if sentinel, a month on For-Bid to prevent her from eating her feces and reinfesting I’m at a loss. Also weird that it goes days sometimes but no worm, then suddenly they’re back.
Plus had deurontinal more times than I can count.
Cat Ella had a tapeworm, cat Willy didn’t. Ella got a deworming shot this afternoon. Can she safely interact with Willy tonight? If not, when can she?
How long for Drontal Plus to kill tapeworm and could the death of the worm cause stomach upset? (no vomiting, just upset)

As long as it is going back into the rectum I would just keep monitoring. It usually prolapses a little after a bowel movement. If it comes out and stays out, like long and tubular versus donut or cheerio, then hopefully it will resolve with time and appropriate diet and anthelmintic (anti parasite) treatment. I recommend a very good age appropriate diet and recheck fecal exams. If it comes out keep it lubricated and we your vet ASAP.
Thanks for the response! He had a bowel movement a bit ago…and there was another tapeworm? segment on his anus 🙁 And it seems that his prolapse is looking redder, but not sure. My other concern is that I’m supposed to go out of town tomorrow and wonder if he should possibly go to after hours clinic.
