I recently adopted a 3 year old male treeing walker coonhound from my local shelter. We don’t know any history on him, but it is clear that the shelter did not work with him while he was there for several months. For the most part, he seems to be housebroke. However, whenever we leave he decides to urinate all over the house. He doesn’t do this when we are home, but we don’t let him out of our sight due to this being an issue. He also has this thing where he doesn’t want to do anything for himself. He doesn’t want to move, he doesn’t want to get up, he doesn’t come when called, he doesn’t ask to go outside, he doesn’t want treats for good behavior, he doesn’t eat a lot. It’s like he does what he wants, on his own time, when he wants. We are being patient with him, but we would really like for him to be a family oriented, trustworthy dog. We also do not want to have a dog we have to keep kenneled. Does anyone have any suggestions on what to do to fix these behaviors?
Hi my cat has just been prescribed Metacam; can you please advise for how long he should take it before I take another urine sample back to the vets? He has a little blood in his urine and the vet has put him on this medication. Thanks.

No one but your vet can answer this appropriately. Too many variables like disease, diagnostics (or lack there of), and your cats physical health influence this answer.
Please call your vet and ask for clarification on the duration and use of the medication they prescribed. It is part of the exam and office fee you paid for and they are the best source for your cats ideal care. Also ask about diet, exercise and supplements to help avoid future episodes.
My cat has a very bad abscess on his head. Was sick for a few days before we realized. A drain tube was installed about 30 hours ago. Lots of drainage still. Cat not very responsive, eyes not opening to look at me, mostly laying in one spot. As far as i can tell, he’s only getting up to urinate in the box. He drank some water last night. Had a very very small bite of food but hasn’t really eaten for days. Is this normal now that the tube is installed? He was given fluids and a antibiotic shot. I feel like the infection, not the antibiotics, is winning the battle. How long before I see progress or need to take him back to the vet? I’m thinking we should go back tomorrow 48 hours after having the tube installed if he’s still like this. Thoughts?

This could be medical. Have you taken your cat in to check for a UTI? If not, this should be step 1. Take a fresh urine sample with you, if possible.
This could also be behavioral. Is your cat stressed? Do you have two or more litterboxes (one per cat plus one), and does your cat use any of them? Have you tried different litter types? Has your schedule changed suddenly, or is someone new in your life? Could your cat be bored? Do you use room sprays and scents that might bother him? Do you have other animals in your home, and could any of them be picking on him? How about people – do you live with any other people, and could they be harassing or otherwise mistreating him when you’re not around?
dachshund frequent urination, lack of appetite, tired and weak. No fever, he’s dehydrated and currently getting fluid at the vet along with antibiotics. What could be making him sick? he started getting like this earlier this week
With out additional info the problem list is long even if you have ruled out infection. Let your vet perform some blood work and other test to reach a diagnosis
Hi David. Blood work has been done and they only said his while blood count was low. Also checked his urine and it came back ok. Haven’t really gave any information as to why he is sick
I tried washing it off but it starts getting wet/oily again before shes even fully dried. she shakes her head every once in a while and doesnt like it when i try to examine it. while giving her a bath, i couldnt find any cuts or irritations. She has normal urine and stool and eats and drinks fine too. A couple weeks ago we found her biting her paw to the point where it was almost raw so we had put an ecollar on her. and just about 2 days ago we noticed that the top of her head looked as if someone had spilled a small spoon of oil on her head.
I would take her to a vet for evaluation – sounds like she has an allergy or skin condition developing and you will need help to resolve it.
In the mean time I would remove all grains from her diet, including treats. Dogs don’t need grains and don’t digest them well. And while not every dog is allergic to grains the can cause just enough impact on the immune system that other allergies can get a food-hold. Go to a good pet store (not grocery store, big box store, nor a pet store that sells puppies) and ask to be shown to the grain-free dog food area. Then start reading labels, you want a dog food that has real meat listed as the first 2 (or even better, 3) ingredients. Real meat is easy to spot, it will say lamb, elk, bison, turkey, salmon meal, whitefish meal, etc. (meal is the entire animal ground up and dried).
Don’t buy any food that lists ‘by products’ in the ingredients – you would be paying premium price for an inferior product.
Avoid chicken and beef – many dogs are reactive to these sources of protein.
If the vet recommends Benadryl use Zyrtec instead – I find that it works better for dogs.

I just got a new 9 week old kitten. I got him the night before last. The Kitten is perfectly healthy in every way but one. It is eating solid and canned food. Canned food once a day and dry food through the day. He is drinking water. He is playful and active. Has urinated about 4 times. His belly is not hard. And he is sleeping well.
BUT he has not pooped yet.
The old owners said he pooped the morning of the day I picked him up. But that was Thursday and this is Saturday. I am worried. I wonder if it may be the stress of a new home, no mother or litter mates and two new cats. The one cage of mine has not taken to the kitten yet but the other is coming around.
I do have a vet appointment booked but I have anxiety and I worry.

She is a Bengal, approx 1 year old, de sexed and lives with a male tabby 5 years old also desexed. They are both healthy indoor cats. There have been no other behavioural changes, she’s very affectionate, eating and drinking well. No more or less than usual. The urine stains don’t show any signs of discolouration and don’t smell unusual or different from the other cat’s.
our cat is 3 monthes, several days ago we’ve seen blood in his urine. A doctor prescribed coboctane, no spa, Etamsylate,catosal. After 2 days of injectios our cat started to lose his balance, he is inert, tries to urinate but we see it tkes him great pains,ih hurts him. What it can be? Please help, we beg you

My cat has lost weight and hes still eating and drinking. His third eyelid is visible and his urine in an orange color and foamy.
It sounds like he needs to go to the vet to be examined. Dependent on his age and other health issues he may need blood work, x-rays and/or have his urine checked.

Okay, I’m working on the housebreaking thing. But how do I go about teaching him how to play? Or be around people? Whenever I try he seems scared even though I’m extremely calm with him.
Also, any suggestions on how to get him to “come” when I call his name? He looks, just ignores.

Thank you for adopting! It is impossible for a shelter to housebreak a dog. They simply lack the time and resources to do so. Therefore you will need to essentially start from scratch in both housebreaking and crate training as I think it is very very difficult to do one without the other. It is the only way to reward and provide the training your dog needs. I would also presume that your dog might be urinating in the house sullly due to stress when you are away. Your presumption about much of his behavior “he doesn’t want to move get up, ask to go outside, etc” are all things he needs to be taught to do. He needs to be shown what play, walking on a leash, shown how to ring a bell on a door, etc etc are all your responsibility in training. Please see your vet and please ask for assistance in finding a positive reinforcement trainer. I also really like Victoria Stilwells books. It really sounds like your dog needs a friend and a mentor and a whole lot of tlc and time.

I know he isn’t a puppy, but have you looked into beginner obedience class? It’s very good for dogs socially as well a owners for basic training help and how to get started. I highly recommend it. It’s not too expensive (talk to your vet for references and local trainers) and it is money WELL spent. Best if luck!!
In time he will trust you and start coming out of his shell. I see it all the time in rescues. Sometimes it happens in a few days. Other cases take weeks. For now be gentle, use treats to coax him or just pick him up and carry him. He will eventually start to trust and interact.
